Sister Betty J. Wilborn, a wonderful mother to her three children, a beloved sister to her siblings, a precious grandmother to her grand and great-grandchildren, a daughter who loved her parents, and a God-fearing lady, has entered her eternal rest at the delightful age of 82, on Sunday, May 7, 2017, in Temple. Her family will receive guests during visitation at 11 am, until service time at 12 pm celebrating her life tribute service on Friday, May 12, 2017, at New Zion Missionary Baptist Church, 1505 Dansby Street, Bryan. Interment will be 12 noon, Saturday, May 13, 2017, at Paradise Cemetery, 10401 West Montgomery Road, Houston, Texas, 77088. Life Tribute Services are in the care of Callaway-Jones Funeral Home and Cremation Centers Bryan-College Station.

Our queen was born to her parents Mr. Vernon Cook and Mrs. Hazel Roberts Cook, on October 10, 1934, in Houston, Texas. She would be one of four children to the lovely union of marriage. Betty believed in hard and honest work to make the best living possible for her and her family by working as a heavy equipment operator on the Trans-Alaska Pipeline in the mid-1970’s. She retired from the College of Education (EDCI) with Texas A&M University. A believer in Lord Jesus Christ she was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in College Station, Texas.

Betty was a very outspoken advocate in the communities in which she lived, becoming a voice for the voiceless. Receiving the President’s Volunteer Service Award from the Council on Service and Civic Participation in January 2002. With the Voices for Children Program, she served as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteer. After training for the Brazos Valley Area Agency on Aging in the Ombudsman Program, she became an Ombudsman advocate for nursing home and assisted living facility residents. In August of 2005, she dedicated many volunteer hours in assisting over 200 families who suffered the effects of Hurricane Katrina, by finding community resources such as housing, furnishings, medical, clothing assistance and numerous other awards and recognitions.

Preceding Betty in death are her parents, her husbands’ Mr. James Earl Frisco and Mr. James Wilborn, her brothers Mr. Vernon V Cook Jr., Mr. William “Billy” Cook; and her brother-in-law Mr. John Smith.

Her life’s legacy continues through her children Jackie “Jack” Cook and wife Selma, Willis J. White, her daughter Wanda J. Allen Reddick and husband Kenneth; her nine grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren; her brothers John R. Nichols, Joel D. Cook and wife Christina, and Thomas Johnson; her sister Martha Smith; and other relatives and close friends.

  4. My sincere condolences to the family. Betty was a very straight forward person. Unfortunately I have no been in her company since she moved from Houston. I would see her on some special occasions and she was always the same. Her sister Martha was one of my best friends.

During my first encounter with aunt Betty following my marriage to her niece, Josephine, I was sternly told “If you hurt my niece, you will have to deal with me.” I never forgot those words. Peaceful travels aunt Betty. You have begun a journey that we all must travel some day. You will be missed. God’s grace and mercy upon the family.

  8. So sorry for the loss of a beautiful, loving, kind and sweet woman who I called Aunt Betty. She will be missed by so many that loved her so dearly. Praying for my Aunt Martha and the entire Cook Family.
