Darlene Pittman

Darlene Pittman, 82, of College Station passed away August 8, 2017 at Isle of Watercrest. Family and friends are invited to a time of visitation from 5 until 7 p.m. Thursday, August 10, at Callaway-Jones Funeral Center in Bryan. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, August 11, at the Aggie Field of Honor, immediately followed by a memorial celebration of life at 11 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall at A&M United Methodist Church.

Darlene was born April 20, 1935, in Anson, Texas, to Weldon and Francis Smith.

As our family history records, a small young girl would wait on her family’s mailbox for the mail to be delivered by the gentleman rural postal carrier and his young son. That mailman would become Darlene’s father-in-law and the mailman’s young son would become Darlene’s husband much later in her young life. Simple everyday events combine to become a full and rich life.
Rod asked Darlene to marry him at the start of his senior year at Texas A&M College (now Texas A&M University) They were married on September 10, 1955 in the First United Methodist Church in their hometown of Anson, Texas. After they graduated from college in 1956, Rod and Darlene moved to Lufkin. Together they lived happily in Lufkin for over 50 years.

They successfully raised two sons. Darlene volunteered throughout her life in the First United Methodist Church – Lufkin, Rotary / Rotary Ann, Lufkin Service League (now Junior League), Memorial Hospital Volunteer Auxiliary, Aggie Club fundraisers (now 12th Man Foundation), and numerous political fundraisers. Darlene had wonderful and funny Lufkin and Aggie friends throughout her great life.

Darlene and Rod made up a very successful team and loving partnership for nearly 55 years. They shared a life of adventures that took them all over the world together. When Rod died suddenly in 2010, a major part of Darlene died too. She bravely tried to continue her life without her husband beside her. Friends and family tried to help but Darlene was never the same after 2010. And now Darlene and Rod are together again with our Heavenly Father.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Rod Pittman; parents, Weldon and Frances Smith; parents-in-law, Earnest and Maude Pittman; and brother-in-law, Joe White.

Darlene is survived by her sons, Lee Pittman and Lane Pittman; daughter-in-law,
Debbie Pittman; grandson, Jeremy Pittman and his son, Logan Pittman; granddaughter, Jennifer and her children, Alex, Madison, Gage; sisters, Jeanette Feagan and Pam Johnson; brother-in-law, Jay Johnson; sister-in-law, Doris Ann White; and numerous wonderful nieces and nephews, cousins, and terrific friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to A&M United Methodist Church or the charity of your choice.
