David Evans

David W. “Pookey” Evans, Baytown native and resident of College Station, TX, died on October 24th. He was 78.
Born in Mt. Pleasant, Texas, March 21, 1939, he moved with his parents from Pittsburgh, Texas, to Pelly—later to be incorporated along with Goose Creek into Baytown. He attended Baytown schools, graduating from Robert E. Lee in 1957, managing to become an Eagle Scout along the way. He enrolled at Texas A&M University in 1957, where he worked as a trainer under Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant. Leaving with the Class of ’61, he became a member of the Medical Corp in the U.S. Army, returning to the states from his assignment in Baumholder, Germany, to work for Humble Oil out of Grand Isle, Louisiana. Life in the Gulf was short-lived, and Evans returned and settled in Baytown, joining Herbert-Hauser Insurance Agency and establishing roots with his family. He remained in Baytown as an independent insurance agent and continued his business in College Station when he relocated in 2010.
Known by many as “Pookey,” Evans was involved in numerous civic endeavors throughout his life. He was an active member of the Baytown Jaycees, becoming President in 1966, later becoming Vice President of the Texas chapter. He was a Baytown City Councilman, state director for the Jaycees, as well as a state director in the Junior Chamber of Commerce. He was a driving force in the establishment of the first Ross S. Sterling High School’s booster club and kept that spirit and drive in his later years as a member and then president of the Baytown A&M Club. He was recognized by the Texas A&M Association of Former Students for leading the efforts of the Baytown A&M Club to send student organizers of the “Red, White, and Blue Out” project to New York where they presented NY police and firefighters with a check for nearly $200,000. Evans has left an indelible impression on all who encountered him during his long and productive service as a community leader and motivator, a steward of service and civic responsibility.

  3. Oh my Carolyn, We were so sad to hear about David. When I saw you’ll about two weeks ago, he looked better than I had seen him in a couple of years. Someone from Baytown came in and told David. We were so sad as I know you are. You’ll were a match made in heaven. Pookie, as we called him, was the most unique individual I think we have ever known, loved the man from the bottom of our hearts. He will be missed so much. Sending you a big hug and a special prayer at this time. So sorry for your loss and hope time will heal and the wonderful memories will replace the sadness. Love to you and the family at this time. Barbara and David Russell
