Durwood Speights was born on May 5, 1922 to Homer and Clara Speights of Mineola, Texas, where he grew up working at the family farm and cotton gin. He served our country in WWII in Patton’s Third Army and received the Purple Heart. He married Peggy Rose Turbeville in 1946 and began their married life together in Tyler, Texas and moved to Bryan in 1958.
He had a deep love for Texas A&M and graduated in the Class of 1949, then achieved Masters and Doctorate degrees in Horticulture Science at A&M. The Speights opened The Floral Center and Durwood enjoyed the many relationships that developed over the 32 years in their 29th Street location and always loved helping families celebrate their special events.
Durwood and Peggy were active members of the former St. Paul’s United Methodist Church and later joined St. Luke’s United Methodist in Bryan. Durwood and Peggy were encouraged by the love and support from church friends throughout the years. Durwood’s faith in his Lord and Savior sustained him throughout his life.
Durwood was a Scottish Rite Mason, 32nd degree in the Sul Ross Lodge in College Station. He was also a lifetime member of the American Legion Earl Graham Post #159 in Bryan.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy Rose Turbeville Speights. Survivors include his four children and their families; Sharyn and Dan Galvin of Kandern, Germany; Stephen Speights of San Antonio; Julie and Michael Hogan of Denver, CO; and Laurie and Jody Johnston of Tampa, FL; 13 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Billie Speights Caffey. His family will miss his strong example of love and devotion and the encouragement he offered through his loving ways.
The family of Durwood Speights wishes to acknowledge and thank the many caregivers and medical professionals that provided care for him in his later years. Rev. Jeff Dungan of St. Luke’s UMC, Pastor Gary Adams of Crestview Retirement Communities and Rev. Guy Pry (retired) have provided prayer and support for the Speights family and will officiate the funeral service.

Condolences

  1. While I had the pleasure of knowing Drwood as
fellow patient in Crestviews assisted living facility. we had resided only a few blocks apart on Nagle. We had our meals at the same table so we had many a pleasant meal and conversation. Words are inadequate to express the loss I feel. Externally, I maay not show much grief, but inside I have a deep and nonreplaceable loss.
    H. R. (Bob) Crookshank

  2. A Father full of wisdom and grace, always ready to listen, slow to give advice. You will be missed Daddy.

A Father filled with wisdom and grace, always ready to listen, slow to give advice. You will be missed Daddy.

  3. I was given the opportunity by Dr. Speights to work at The Floral Center while attending Texas A & M in 1973. I worked for him and his wife for 5 years as their main floral designer. He was a very well respected man, both in our community and at the university. Quietly reserved, kind-hearted and thoughtful of one’s feelings are the qualities I will always remember. Rest in peace Dr. Speights.
