Gertrude Brown, 92, of Carriage Inn, Bryan, Texas, was born in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. She and her husband owned and operated Brown’s Market on Cleveland Street in Allentown, Pennsylvania, for many years. Trudy was a champion bowler and an avid bridge player. She was known for both at Carriage Inn, where she had lived for the past two years, and also for her determination in the face of 1,000-piece puzzles.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 63 years, Joseph S. Brown, and by her sisters, Margaret Zipf, Doris Loncarovich and Marie Kuritz, and brothers, Karl and Arthur Zipf.
Gertrude is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Kirk and Constance Brown of College Station, Larry and Lana Brown of Jacksonville, Florida, and J. Samuel and Peggy Brown of Cape May Courthouse, New Jersey, and Marco Island, Florida; her sister and brother-in-law, Caroline and George Radchuk of Bethlehem; and by eleven grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held by the family at a later date, with interment in the Union Cemetery of Hellertown, Pennsylvania. Memorial gifts may be made to the Rev. C. Harry Kehm Fund at Grace UCC Church, 623 Cleveland St., Allentown, Pennsylvania, 18103.
Trudy was such a wonderful lady and I will miss her. I am Brownie Everett’s daughter, Becky, and I went to exercise class on Saturdays at Carriage Inn. Trudy gave me a kiss on the cheek and a hug every time I saw her without fail. If I asked her how she was feeling, she said on more than one occasion…”I am okay, no need to complain. No one wants to hear complaints anyway.” She was such a delight and had such a great attitude. After exercise class, she would help move a table for a card game activity and set up the chairs….she was fast and efficient and would smile so big when I told her so. Brownie and I will miss her and she will not be forgotten.
I know “Trudy” will be greatly missed by my Mother (Mildred Cameron) and all others at Carriage Inn. I enjoyed visiting with her and watching her work those puzzles. My Mother played bridge with her and enjoyed her company. Thank God for all of the precious memories she brought.
