Maurice Young, 92, of Bryan, passed away on Saturday, October 15, 2016 in Bryan. Services are scheduled for a visitation at 10am until the time of service at 11am on Tuesday, October 18, 2016 at St. Luke’s Methodist Church, 2700 West Villa Maria Road. Interment will follow immediately after in Giesenschlag Cemetery, near Snook. Services are in the care of Callaway-Jones Funeral and Cremation Centers of Bryan-College Station.

Maurice was born at home in Sterrett, Texas on May 28, 1924 to Xerxes and Bertha Hastings. She and her big sister, Bernice, grew up in Eustace, Texas surrounded by relatives from both sides of the family.

After high school graduation, she attended Durham Business School in Dallas and followed her sister to California where Kaiser Ship Builders employed her during World War II. There in 1943 she married Eddie Lawrence Bailey, a sailor serving on the U.S.S. Sepulga, who was also from the Eustace area.

At the close of the war, the couple settled in Houston, Texas and had three children, Col. Edward (Eddie) Lee Bailey, Sharon Duewall Douglas, and Barbara Mikeska. In 1958 they bought a country grocery store surrounded by cotton fields near the Brazos River at Wilcox, Texas

Following her husband’s death in 1982, she married Ralph Young Sr, in 1985 and lived in Bryan. Preceding Maurice in death are Eddie Lawrence Bailey, Ralph Young Sr., her parents, sister, and son Col. Edward Lee Bailey.

Her survivors include her loving children and their spouses, Sharon and Bob Douglas of Salado, Barbara and David Mikeska, of Conroe, and daughter-in-law Margie Sebesta Bailey of Plano. Maurice’s grandchildren are Carl Duewall, Gina Bailey Skinner and husband Johnny, Steven Duewall, Lee X Bailey and wife Pia, Lucas Mikeska and Betsy Horner, K. D. Douglas Hill and husband Graydon, Richard Douglas, Emily Mikeska and Dan Genthe; great grandchildren are Ben and Lee Duewall, Dakota, Bailey and Austin Skinner and Emily Hill; her step-sons are Dr. Ralph and Cathy Young, Dr. Alan and Nancy Young, their children and grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, Maurice requested donations be given to Hospice Brazos Valley, 502 West 26tth Street, Bryan, Texas 77803

  1. I have many happy memories of working with Maurice when I worked as a nurse for the Drs. Young. She was so kind, funny and warm-hearted. My sympathy to her family.
