Robert Guy Neelley, Jr.
April 21, 1920 – August 4, 2017

Robert Neelley Jr., 97, of Wellborn, Texas, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 4, 2017, in Bryan. A memorial service honoring his life will be at 10 am Friday, September 1, 2017, at Callaway-Jones Funeral and Cremation Centers Bryan-College Station.

Robert Neelley is no longer the familiar fixture he used to be around the Neelley’s Store and Wellborn Post Office. He was appointed postmaster in 1953 and served for 28 years until he retired in 1981. Robert was born in Wellborn, Texas and spent his childhood working in his father’s store and the post office. He graduated from A&M Consolidated High School. As a youth, he was a victim of severe asthma attacks that resulted in him having to go to Kerrville for relief. As a side effect would prove a blessing for him as he met the love of his life, Florence. She was the daughter of the owner’s of the boarding house in which he resided. Robert and Florence were married on April 21, 1942, and shared the covenant of marriage for 64 years before her passing in 2006. Robert was a lifelong member of Wellborn Baptist Church. He was a Master Mason for 77 years and Life Member of the Scottish Rite and Arabia Shriners.

He is survived by his brother, Charles E. Neelley and wife Sharon; his nephew, Charles E. Neelley Jr. and his daughter, Mary Rose; his niece, Donna Neelley Munson and husband Peter and their daughters Elizabeth and Michelle; and nephew, James Evertson and wife Candyce.

In lieu of flowers memorial gifts may be given to Wellborn Baptist Church, Crestview Retirement Center Community Center, or Hospice Brazos Valley, in Memory of Robert Neelley Jr.

Condolences

  1. Robert Guy – One of the treasures from my childhood in Wellborn, Texas. Always a smile, always helpful, always a friend. Neelley’s Store was a special place because Robert Guy always made me feel welcome. With the Post Office in the store, it was the center of activity in the community. Precious days, precious memories. Robert Guy Neelley was a true Texas gentleman.

  2. We were privileged to have known Robert Guy and Florence back in the 80’s when we lived in Wellborn for 12 or 14 years. Mr. Neelley was our Postmaster and of course ran his little store. We kept our P.O. box there even after mail service was provided to our nearby neighborhood, Wellborn Oaks, as it was such a pleasure to see Mr. Neelley, and often Florence, when stopping in each day to pick up our mail! What warm, wonderful people they both were! I often reminded them that my dad owned a small grocery store in north Texas as I was growing up and that he, too, loved his little community and his customers/friends! Rest in peace, Mr. Neelley. We so regret that Florence predeceased you by so many years as she, too, was a wonderful friend.

  3. We are so sorry for your loss .Mr Neelley was a God fearing man and such an inspiration to all those that knew him! With prayers&love Brad &Lisa Wade and Wallace &Linda Beal

  4. RIP Mr. Neelley. What a blessing it was to meet you at Post Oak Mall as one of us “mall walkers”. My parents and I enjoyed talking to you and was just in awe of you for your cheerful and the amazing way you could walk at your age. Dad passed and you where so sorry to hear that. Thank you for your kindness to me and mom. Godspeed on your journey home.

  5. Was Robert Neelly’s pastor for 20 years and I can say without a doubt he and Florence were a delight as well as two of the most reliable people I have ever known. Rest in peace Robert. Give Florence our love.
