Sally Griffith

Sarah Aileen Kirby Sally Griffith was born on May 17, 1926 in Smiths Grove, Kentucky and died in College Station, Texas on December 6, 2015. Her parents were Arch Howard Kirby Sr. and Reube (pronounced “Ruby”) Elisabeth Ewing. She had one brother, Arch Howard Kirby Jr., who preceded her in death.

Sally moved to Detroit, Michigan, when she was 4 years old. As a girl in Detroit, she enjoyed being outside, riding her bicycle, roller skating and playing basketball. On April 29, 1950, Sally married Harry F. Griffith Jr., and they later had two daughters: Cynthia (Cindy) Aileen and Elisabeth (Lisa) Jayne. In 1966, the family moved to Dallas, Texas. Sally eventually became a single mother and worked numerous jobs to provide for her daughters. She later gained two sons-in-law: Richard Keith Mitchell and Neel Adams Brown.

Always a hard worker, Sally started a career at the Dallas branch of the Internal Revenue Service at age 60, a time when many people retire. In all, she worked for the IRS for 27 years before retiring at the age of 88.

Sally loved spending time with her family, including her five grandchildren and five great grandchildren. In addition to attending family gatherings and holidays, she enjoyed knitting, traveling and sitting on the back porch with her favorite blanket. Sally was a very proud mother and grandmother, and she will always be remembered for her unyielding work ethic, deep love for her family, fierce independence, curiosity, perseverance and never-say-quit attitude.

Sally will be honored during a Celebration of Life Service at 2 p.m. Friday, December 11, 2015, at Christ United Methodist Church in College Station. Services are in the care of Callaway-Jones Funeral Home and Crematory.
