Posted By Web Development On October 12, 2010 @ 12:00 am In Obituary | No Comments

Marie Smith went home to be with the Lord. She went to sleep at her residence and woke up in heaven on Tuesday, October 12. What a glorious end to a life for a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, cousin, worker and friend. She believed in her faith, she lived her faith, and she passed her faith on to her family and friends. Her celebration of life service will be at 3 p.m. on Sunday, October 17, at Callaway-Jones Funeral Home. Rev. Ruben Canales will officiate, and Rev. Tom Kitchen will assist. Interment will follow at Restever Memorial Park in Bryan. The family invites you to the visitation on Saturday from 6 – 8 p.m., at Callaway-Jones Funeral Home.

Marie was born in Cameron, Texas on January 16, 1928 to Otis Whatley and Cammie (Billie) Whatley. When Marie was 10, her mom married Murl Hurt and the family moved to Bryan. Marie went through the Bryan school system and graduated from Stephen Austin High School in 1945. She married J.F. (Red) Smith in July 1946, and they lived in Gulfport, Mississippi before moving to Bryan in the 1950’s. While Red worked at Cade Motor Company (Bryan’s Ford Dealership) and International Harvester Truck Co., Marie kept the home and took care of their 5 children. They both attended most of the activities their children were involved in, and Marie had the chief home in the neighborhood for the other children to come to after school. Marie was a member of St. Joseph Church and was a representative on the first Home School Association Committee. She was a leader in Girl Scouts for over 15 years, and she received the Thanks Badge for all of the work she did for the Scouting program in Bryan-College Station. She retired from Jane’s Little Pals Day Care after many years of taking care of little ones. She will be remembered by her family, her friends and those she came into contact with. Her greatest advice was always, “Things could be worse!”

Marie was preceded in death by her husband Red Smith, two sons Murl and Richard Smith, in-laws Mr. & Mrs. S.J.E. Smith, and parents Murl and Billie Hurt. She is survived by her daughters, Beverly and Tom Kitchen (Bryan), Janice and Gary Brewington (Colorado Springs, Colorado), and Kathy and Jerry Black (Uriah, Alabama). Marie is also survived by daughter-in-law Bea Smith (Spring, Texas) and a sister Charlotte Price (College Station) and a close friend Sandy Hemann (Bryan). She has been blessed with 15 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Marie’s family want to express their gratefulness for the care their mother was given while at St. Joseph’s Hospital, St. Joseph’s Manor, St. Joseph’s Rehab for all the time and care they gave to their patient. They also want to thank Hospice Brazos Valley and Choice Home Care for helping take care of her at home. A special thanks goes to Amanda, Lena, Ashley, and Melissa for helping Marie through to the end. God Bless You!

In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests that all donations be made to Hospice Brazos Valley and American Heart Association in honor of Marie Smith.
