Bernice Popek Ondrasek
April 7, 1940 – November 21, 2018

Bernice Ondrasek, 78, of the Smetana Community, on Wednesday, November 21, 2018, received her angel’s wings unexpectedly. Our family, although sadden, are comforted in knowing our mom, grandmother (Mo), great-grandmother (Ba-bush-ka), aunt, sister, and good friend to many, passed away as she would have planned it, after visiting with family and friends, with no suffering. A visitation will be from 4pm, with a rosary recited at 5:30pm, on Sunday, November 25, 2018, at Callaway-Jones Funeral Centers. Her Mass of Christian Burial will be at 1:30pm, Monday, November 26, 2018, at St. Joseph Catholic Church; interment will follow in Smetana – Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Rev. Msgr. John McCaffrey will officiate. Services are in the care of Callaway-Jones Funeral and Cremation Centers.

Bernice was born in Burleson County on April 7, 1940, to Ben and Anna Oppermann Popek. She was raised in Frenstat, Texas as a good independent and hard working country girl. She married her first husband J.D. Ondrasek and moved to Bryan, where she raised her immediate and combined families through the years. Her third husband was George Easley, whom she unconditionally raised his children as her own. Bernice’s heart was full and giving to all, she never met a stranger. She was active in the lives of her family members always encouraging them to put their best foot forward. Bernice enjoyed cooking so much that she created her own cookbook that her family will cherish for years to come. She wanted to share her joy of cooking with everyone that she was a employed with Bryan ISD as a cook. How Bernice managed this in her earlier years she owned Nemec’s Café and Snacks in Smetana. She was an active member of her community serving thirty-five years as a volunteer firefighter and auxiliary member for Brazos County Precinct 4 Volunteer Fire Department. Bernice, in her heart, was a true saint to countless head start students, beginning their educational careers through the BVCASA Head Start Program. She also took on other short-lived employments with Weingarten’s in Bryan and Anderson RV Sales in Bryan. Bernice in her own manner shared her faith as a catholic with all; she was a life long member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Her son, Darryl Joseph Ondrasek; her parents, Ben and Anna; her sister, Dorothy Kubelka; her second husband Steve Nemec; all precede Bernice in death.

Her sons Joe Dan Ondrasek Jr., and wife Missy, Stephen Ondrasek and wife, Judy; her sister, Carolyn Fritsche; her ten grandchildren, Lasey Luce and husband Keith, Stevie Ondrasek and fiancé Stephanie, Ashley Currie, Sarah Ondrasek, Michael Ondrasek, Reagan Ondrasek, JoDee Ondrasek, Casi Conrad and husband Jake, Douglas McBride and wife Brittany, Jacob Ramsey and wife Kim; four-teen great grandchildren, Caleb Ondrasek, Kylah, Currie, Kinsley Currie, Christopher Alonzo, Addi Alonzo, Skyler Luce, Baylee McBride, Brooklyn McBride, Kynedi McBride, Alexis Ramsey, Karsen Ramsey, Austyn Peacock, and arriving in December is Avery Luce; her husband of eighteen years and father of her children, JD Ondrasek; her third husband George Easley and family; her Precinct 4 Volunteer Fire Family; and other close friends, all survive Bernice Popek Ondrasek.

Honoring their Grandma Mo as pallbearers will be her grandsons Michael, Caleb, Stevie, Jacob, Douglas, and Keith; honorary pallbearers are her granddaughters Lasey, Sarah, JoDee, Reagan, Ashley and Casi.

Deepest sympathy to Bernice’s family. Y’all have lost a very special lady. I know Heaven is an even more fun place to be since she arrived! She and my Mom (Ida Witte Surovik) were first cousins, and it was fun for me to reconnect with Bernice on Facebook recently. May God bless each of you and hold you close to him during this sad time.
