Berma Darlene Schuelke Padgett

Berma Darlene Schuelke Padgett, 75, of Bryan, Texas, passed into the arms of our heavenly father on July 28, 2009, surrounded by her loving family after a long and painful illness. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 31, 2009, at Callaway-Jones Funeral Home, in Bryan, with a rosary at 7 p.m. Funeral services are set for 10 a.m. Saturday, August 1, 2009, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Bryan.

Born on June 26, 1934, in Mud Butte, South Dakota, daughter of Albert and Elizabeth Peregrine Schuelke, she met and married John E. Padgett, Jr. of Brunswick, GA, on August 2, 1952, in Sturgis, South Dakota.

She was a military wife for 26 years, traveling all around the world. Mom was a lifelong member of St. Joseph Catholic Church with several of her children and grandchildren attending St. Joseph School. Mom was active in the church and volunteered her time endlessly. She fostered many children for several years for the state. Besides raising seven children, she worked full time, and she still found time for everyone of her children. She always gave herself to her family and those around her. Most important to her was God and family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her son John E. Padgett III, four brothers, a sister, and several nieces and nephews.

She is survived by her husband of 56 years, John E. Padgett, Jr.; daughter Sharon Wagner and husband Stephen and sons Harold Padgett and Michael Padgett, all of Bryan; son, Bruce Padgett and wife Judy of Wimberly, TX; daughter, Diane Lesure and husband Paul, of North Adams, MA; daughter, Karla Carmichael and husband James, of Ft. Worth; several siblings; 9 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, and several foster children.

  2. Johnny and family.
I know you will miss Berma so much but she will be without pain now and there should be some comfort in that. She was a great lady and one of my most favorite memories was when I called her before mom and dad’s 50th wedding anniversary. I wanted to know if she had any little tid bits she could tell me about them when they were younger and she said ‘Oh just make something up. I’ll probably be true anyway.’ She made me laugh so hard. What a character.
I’m sorry we are so far away that we can’t be there with you now. You all take care and watch over each other. I’ll be praying for you all.

  3. To John and Family. With deepest sympathy I am sorry to hear about your loss. Berma was a God sent, and just a wonderful person. She was always there in time of need, very caring, and loving. She will truly be missed. May God be with you in your time of need.

  6. She was always good to me from the age of 5 ontil the present, growing up with Michael I had an ample opportunity to know John and Berma and still to this day when I refer to love to another human being, I use their relationship as an example… remembering all through my childhood, adolescence and adulthood of the times I would see them walking around the neighborhood in the evenings, holding hands… just like teenagers… This has left an astounding impact in my life… Thank you for always accepting me and most of all giving me a little slice of hope. I love you all… God bless your family… ACO
