In Memorial

Doinan LaVelle Kavanaugh, 72, of College Station, passed away on Sunday, December 9, at Scott & White Hospital – College Station. Visiting hours for Doinan’s family to receive guests at the funeral home will be Wednesday, December 11, from 6 to 8 p.m. Her funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 12, at Callaway-Jones Funeral Home. Interment will follow in College Station City Cemetery on Texas Ave. Services are in the care of Callaway-Jones Funeral Home and Crematory.

Doinan was born in San Antonio, Texas, to Wilbur T. and Dorothy Inez Wilder LaVelle. She is a graduate of A&M Consolidated High School, Class of 1959. She was retired from Texas A&M.

Doinan’s name has a unique origin, as it is a combination of her mother and both grandmothers’ names: Dorothy, Inez and Anne. She enjoyed needlepoint, her little dog, Sugar, and keeping up with friends which included a regular weekly luncheon with a group of ladies – some she’s known since high school.

She is preceded in death by both her parents, and her husband Billy Ray Kavanaugh.

Her survivors include her sons Dwayne and wife Vicki Kavanaugh, of Spring, TX, Ross and wife Kelley Kavanaugh, and Ray Kavanaugh, all of College Station; her grandchildren Brian, Jeff, Jacob, Kyle, Kaleigh, Korra, Kate and Sara; and great-grandson Cole; and her brothers, Doug LaVelle and David LaVelle.

I just heard about Doinan’s passing today (12/12). She was not just a co-worker (Dept. of History, TAMU), she was also a friend. Although I am saddened by the news, I know Doinan is home with our Lord. My condolences to her family. Your mom was truly a kind and thoughtful person. God’s grace and peace be with you all.

Condolence from Ken and Susan Livingston on December 11th, 2013 9:49 am

We were saddened to read an Obituary for Doinan. What happy, happy memories we have of all the times sitting in the stands together–talking, watching, yelling during the many games we watched. Doinan was a special person to us. Ken enjoyed telling her of memories of the 3 classes he had under Prof. Kavanaugh while at A&M. Susan and she always had “current events” they could talk on and on about. We share in your sorrow, but are thankful for the many memories.

Ray – your mom was such a blessing to me during college. Countless times I stopped by her office after class to visit. During an especially rough semester, she was the source of encouragement I needed. May your family be filled with sweet memories of her that bring comfort and smiles.

It was sad to read in the paper that our friend and colleague from the Department of Recreation, Park & Tourism Sciences at TAMU had died. May all of you but especially the grandchildren be comforted by happy memories of Doinan. Paul and I extend our sincere sympathy.
