In Memorial

Dorothy “Dee Dee” McKinney, 56, of Somerville, passed away Sunday, June 21, 2009, at St. Joseph Regional Health Center in Bryan. Arrangements are under the care of Callaway-Jones Funeral Home in Bryan. No services are planned at this time, as there will be a memorial gathering of friends and family at a later date.

Dorothy was born November 2, 1952, in Corpus Christi to William and Dorothy Evans. Dee Dee was an unusual woman, as she had an I.Q. in the 180’s and had an excellent memory. She learned to become a fabulous florist after her sister passed away. She also had a great sense of humor, and she always introduced her husband Daniel as her insignificant other. Dee Dee was well known for always doing everything she could to help someone else.

Survivors include her husband, Daniel Paul, of Somerville; mother, Dorothy Evans, of Rosenberg; brothers, Leslie Evans, of Bay City, Larry Evans, of Pasadena; 4 nieces and a nephew.

The family has asked for memorial donations to be made to any charity benefiting cancer patients.

DeeDee was one of the most helpful, funniest, outrageous, intelligent–people in the carcinoid internet support group. I never met her in person but enjoyed and profited from her spunky e-mail messages to us. I shall miss her and am so sorry her life was so short.7

Condolence from Georgia Beauchemin on June 25th, 2009 2:59 am

I doubt that anyone who met Dee Dee would ever forget her – even if that meeting was via the Internet.
She left us too soon, but her incredible spirit will be carried on indefinitely by the many she inspired in the Carcinoid World.
My deepest condolences to Dan and others in Dee Dee’s family.

Dan and DeeDee’s family – I remember most her sense of humor. Laughter is such a wonderful balm to the soul. Dee was good at passing it out. I was aquainted with her through the on line CARCANOID support group, to which she gave so much of herself.

Condolence from Kathy Wright Peoples on June 25th, 2009 12:17 pm

Carcinoid cancer never took away your wonderful sense of humor or ability to make me smile. I’ll will miss you.

Condolence from Diana Daley on June 25th, 2009 2:24 pm

Dee Dee, there is little that I can add that has not already been written. I remember her fight for what was a ‘right’ for every person for the medical care that should be a given no matter who you were, if you had insurance, and if you had or not money. She was such a wonderful advocate especially for the ‘carcinoid cancer’ and/or us fellow noids. I remember how excited she was when she found black and white yarn for us ‘Zebra’. I can’t imagine going on to our internet list and not seeing her name and laughing at her posts. Dee Dee, I hope God knows what he is in for…God rest you soul and to Dee Dee’s family: Be kind to yourself and somehow find peace that Dee Dee is no longer suffering. My prayers to all of you in finding comfort in that. Good-bye me friend until we meet again.

Condolence from Carol Braunstein – Alaska on June 25th, 2009 7:22 pm

I met D. D. at our Houston Support Group and spent personal time with her as we sat around the table. I followed her comments on line and enjoyed the thought that I had known her personally–however shortly. Peace and Love.

Your duty bravely done,

Condolence from Nick Thorne (Bluenose) on June 26th, 2009 3:41 am

Dee Dee, you were a force of nature, our inspiration, our moral compass. You lead by example and your legacy will live on. We never met in person, something I will be eternally sorry for, but we had a true meeting of minds and you taught me how to respect those who disagree with me – no mean feat. I will always think of you as my Auntie Dee Dee, who took me in hand when I did not know I needed it and I am all the better as a human being for it. Farewell, sweet friend. Swim free.

Condolence from Andy Taylor (Pachyderm) on June 26th, 2009 10:13 am

As with my fellow Toadfish above, I only met Dee Dee in cyberspace, but her wit and ability to see through the difficult situations will be sorely missed. The world is a greyer place without her, but brighter for her presence in it.

Dee Dee was everything a human being should be; Brave, determined, funny, cantankerous, generous, opinionated, and above all a first class campaigner against any kind of intolerance or injustice.

It was an honour to be associated with you ‘Auntie’ , and it’s a darker world now your smiting stick is hung up.

You were one of the best aunties a girl could ever have, one that inspired, made us laugh and could outsmart and out cook us all. You and I spoke the same language: music. I am grateful for the conversations we had, the moments we shared and all the fun times we had together. I’ll miss you and love you always Auntie DeeDee. -The Child
