Edith Mae (Halbert) Wigginton
1902 – 2006
Edith Mae (Halbert) Wigginton passed into the loving care of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, in Bryan, Texas, on October 13, 2006, after living almost 104 years. She was a faithful member of the Church of Christ for about 90 years, and attended the A-M congregation (College Station) for the past four years since moving from Dallas and the Edgefield congregation in the Oak Cliff section of Dallas. She was born November 21, 1902, to Leona Lee (Long) Halbert and William Eli Halbert of Kaufman County. Her mother died when she was but two years old, and she was raised amongst nine loving aunts and uncles (and cousins) in the small town of Kaufman, Texas. She met and married her husband Walter Wigginton there in 1926. They had their only child Betty Ann (Wigginton) Garrett while living in Commerce, Texas. After Pearl Harbor Day, they moved to Dallas where they lived the rest of their lives together. Walter died in 1990.
Edith is a descendent of Dr. Joseph Fox, who helped settle the area around Kaufman and was born in England in 1800. He went to sea and wandered for many years before settling in Kaufman County in 1851. He was a country doctor, mostly to the Indians and early settlers in Texas, and became a landowner around Rand where he gave the land for the Fox Cemetery. Edith will be buried there on Tuesday, October 17, in a private service at 11 a.m. Betty Garrett lives in Bryan, Texas, with her husband William J. Garrett. Edith is survived by her loving granddaughter, Cynthia Ann (Garrett) Paul of University Park, and four great-grandsons, Jay Garrett Paul of Dallas, Travis Bryan Paul and Jed Alexander Paul, both of Austin, and Clay Austin Paul who is attending TAMU at Galveston. The Lord in His grace, loved her and gave her comfort all the days of her life, and she let His light shine through her, always serving and caring for others around her. What a blessing she has been to us all these many years.
