Elmo Leon Newsom, Jr., 82, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 2, 2019, at his home with family members by his side. Graveside visitation will begin at 10:30 am, with a Life Tribute Service at 11 am, Saturday, March 9, 2019, at Rest-Ever Memorial Park, 5103 North Texas Ave, Bryan. Elmo was born in Brenham, Texas to Elmo Leon Newsom Sr. and Elizabeth Washerlesky Newsom, growing up in the Sun Oil Field near Independence, Texas. He received his Associates Degree from Blinn College and ultimately had a career at Texas A&M University as the Supervisor of the Physical Plant’s Mechanical and Engineering Shop. He married Mary Lou Lenz on June 1, 1963 at Bethel Lutheran Church in Bryan, Texas and enjoyed 52 years of marriage. He and Mary Lou shared the love of the outdoors, enjoying a good fishing trip or dove hunt whenever they had the change, and always cheering on the Texas A&M Aggie football and baseball teams. Prior to his stroke, Elmo’s other hobbies included being a gunsmith, creating spinning lures for bass fishing, and then of course, “testing” his creations. He also enjoyed cooking, mastering many of his mom’s recipes for pies, strudels, and pickles. He was known for his barbeque and had secret sauces and techniques to make it magnificent. He often cooked domestic and wild game for family and friends, occasionally ramrodding BBQ for the Sons of Hermann events. He was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church, Sons of Hermann Lodge #99, and a member of the National Rifle Association.

His mother and father, Elmo Sr. and Elizabeth, his wife Mary Lou, and his sister, Marie Doloris preceded Elmo in death. Numerous nieces, nephews, his wife’s extended family, and a host of friends and caregivers survive him.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Bethel Lutheran Church, Bryan, Texas or a charity of your choice.
