Galen Douglas Clark

September 29, 1953 – December 31, 2019

Galen Douglas Clark was born September 29, 1953, in Ft. Worth, Texas, and unexpectedly departed from this life on December 31, 2019.  Galen was the son of Dr. Donald R. & Evelyn Clark.  Growing up in College Station, Galen attended College Hills Elementary and graduated from A&M Consolidated High School.  He later served as a Medic in the Army working in Colorado and Germany.

After leaving the service, Galen was in Austin where it was suggested he seek employment at the Austin State School for the Blind.  His expressive language, due to his insatiable passion for reading, allowed him to eloquently describe the world’s surroundings for his students and help them “see” in a beautiful way.  Galen was well suited for the responsibilities because of his gentle soul and that, along with his sense of humor, made him a gifted instructor.

With Galen’s strong bond with his parents and grandparents, he later developed a yearning to continue his work with children by seeking a degree in formal education.  This took him to the University of North Texas, where he earned a B.A. with Honors in Education.

In 1998, he met his wife, Kathy and they both began working for the Birdville Independent School District in North Richland Hills, Texas.  Together, they were dedicated in their work with special needs children helping them reach full potential within the academic world as well as in their own community.

Galen and his wife were credited for piloting a program to implement the first Co-teaching Model for combining primary and secondary classes on the same campus to maximize support and success for their students.  Galen retired from teaching in June 2012.  Stressors prevented Galen and Kathy from staying together and they formally divorced in 2015.  That said, they continued to express their affection for each other until the day he left this earth.

Galen was planning to sell his home and move to be near his son in Belize this year.  He had returned from there just weeks prior to his death and was excited with the possibilities of “relaxing and spending quality time with his son.” What ended up being the last days of his life were blessed with quality time spread among many members of his family.

His survivors include,  Barbara Ladwig, Stepmother; Christopher Pruitt, Son; Lou Anne Stephenson, Sister; Jeff Clark, Brother.  He is preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Donald R. Clark and Evelyn D. Clark.

Cremation services are in the care of Callaway-Jones Funeral and Cremation Centers of Bryan-College Station, Texas.

Condolences

  1. I knew Galen in high school as a sweet, kind soul. The tribute written about him tells the tale of a beautiful man whose life was dedicated to helping others. God bless and keep you all. The world is a better place because of Galen.

  2. We were neighbors to the Clark family when Galen, his sister Lou Anne and his brother Jeff Clark we’re growing up in College Station. Condolences to the family of Galen.

  3. My daughter, Emma, and I met Galen in Belize. He touched our souls in the brief time that we spent together. His love for nature, all encompassing. His passion for literature, unmatched. His love for Chris, incredibly evident. His smile, capturing. We continued our friendship when we both got back from Belize. We shared many inspiring novels, beautifully written and orchestrated songs, as well as a respect and yearning to learn more, experience more and live more. He shared his love, his genuine warmth, and his knowledge freely and altruistically. He embraced my daughter as a beautiful soul that touched his heart. A short time together, a lifetime impact. Galen made the world a better, more kind, more empathetic place. My heart to his family and friends.
