George Larry Vinson, 89, of Austin, passed away on March 16th, 2011, on the day of his 67th Wedding Anniversary to Jean Tomlin Vinson. A celebration of Larry’s life will begin at 10:30 a.m., Friday, March 25, 2011, at Callaway-Jones Funeral Home in Bryan, Texas, with his nephew, Rev. David Owens officiating. A viewing will be from 10 a.m. until service time at Callaway-Jones. His urn will be interred in a family plot in Red Lodge, Montana, at a later date.

Larry was born on Nov. 11, 1921, in Hubbard, Texas, to Harris and Mary Vinson. He was a graduate of Texas A&M University with a Masters Degree in Geology. He also attended the Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colorado.

During WWII he was a navigator on B-29 bombers in the Army Air Corps.
As a petroleum geologist for Standard Oil he was fortunate to live and work in many western and southern States, and numerous countries around the world. From 1957 to 1961 he worked in Central America, specifically Guatemala, where he was credited with finding some important Mayan ruins.

Starting in 1961 he worked in Europe, Western and Northern Africa, while he was living in London, England. When he retired in 1977, he continued working for Standard Oil in South America as a consultant. He then retired to his home state of Texas where he had a ranch on Lake Travis near Austin.

He was preceded in death by his daughter Gwendolyn, and his stepson Jack Montana.

Larry is survived by his wife Jean; his daughter, Janell Procter and her husband Bryan; son, George Vinson; grand-daughters, Sonia Golcuklu and her husband Yilmaz, Georgina Willock and her fiance Ryan, Catherine Willock; great grand-daughter, Rania Golcuklu; sister, Veleta Dowell; daughter-in-law, Susan Montana; nephews, Jim Pendergrass, David Owens and his wife Ginger, Bob Vinson, Robert Dowell; nieces, Jackie Cole, Elaine Siscoe, Justine Roberts, Roxanne Byler and her husband Jay.
Family and friends miss Larry so much, but we know he is in a better place.
