Hertha Burkhalter

Hertha Rose Meyer Burkhalter, passed on to the Lord January 11, 2016, at the age of 91.Hertha was born February 25, 1924 in Gay Hill, Texas, to Meta Drews and Herman Meyer. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church and was an active member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Bryan , Texas for more than 70 years.  She married Chester Henry Burkhalter, December 13, 1941.

Hertha was an avid vegetable and flower gardener.   Her passion was cooking, her home was an open kitchen to all.  Her pickles, bread, pies and  flowers were enjoyed by many.

Hertha was employed by Texas A&M University as a Manager in the Food Services Department, retiring in the mid 1980’s.

She is pre-deceased by her husband, Chester Henry Burkhalter, son, Maynard Simms Burkhalter, parents, five brothers and three sisters.

Hertha is survived by two daughters, Yolanda Burkhalter Houze and husband, Robert, of Seattle, Washington and Tanya Burkhalter Hackney and husband, Don, of Bryan, Texas, and one daughter- in-law, Betty Burkhalter, of Riverside, Texas. She is also survived by three granddaughters,  Rebecca Houze O’Leary, Deborah Houze O’Leary and Tammy Hackney, two great-grandsons, three great- granddaughters, sister, Hermenia Dunn, and brother, Jerry Meyer, two sisters-in-law and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation is from 11:30 to 12:30 on January 16 at Bethel Lutheran Church, Bryan, with services following at 1:00 pm. Burial will be in the Burkhalter Family plot in the Wellborn Cemetery.

The family wishes to thank the staff of St. Joseph Manor Assisted Living and the Skilled Care Unit where Hertha was cared for and loved for the last twelve years.

  3. I am saddened to hear of Hertha’s passing, but also relieved knowing that she is no longer suffering. I know I will see her again. I wish I could have been there for her last year of life. I remember the first day she came to the Manor. I loved taking care of her for 11 1/ 2 years. She was such a lovely lady.
