Jacqueline Price Dunn

Jackie entered this life on July 26, 1980 in Houston, Texas and entered into rest on June 19, 2013 at the age of 32 years in San Diego, California.

She will be deeply missed by her husband Durward B. Dunn IV, parents J. B. and Martha Price, brother Johnny Price (Corey), father & mother-in-law Durward III & Cathy Dunn, sister-in-law Steele Mumphrey (Nathan), brother-in-law Bryan Dunn (Sarah), brother in-law George Dunn (Laura), extended family and friends.

Jackie enjoyed her nine year career as an Engineer with the United States Navy at Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC). She has resided in the San Diego area for the past five years.

Jackie attended elementary school at Holy Spirit Episcopal School, Memorial Middle School, and graduated with honors from Stratford High School, Class of 1998. In high school, Jackie was active in many extracurricular activities. She played on the varsity tennis team, was a member of Thespians, was stage manager in the Stratford Playhouse, was a member of the National Honor Society, and was active on the Model UN Team. Outside of high school, Jackie was involved in theater production for the American Festival for the Arts in Houston.

Upon graduation, Jackie received the Houston Rodeo Scholarship, the Wal-Mart Competitive Edge Scholarship, and the Business Women’s Association Scholarship. Jackie graduated with honors from Texas A&M University in May 2002 with a degree in Industrial Engineering and liked Aggieland so much she stayed another two years to complete her Master’s degree in Agricultural Engineering. While there she was actively involved as an officer of the Class Council to the Memorial Student Center, graduate school representative to the Student Senate, a member of the Silver Spurs, Wesley Foundation, United Campus Ministry, Kappa Delta Sorority, and Christ United Methodist Church’s choir and youth ministry.

While in graduate school, she got engaged to her husband, Durward, her best friend as an undergrad whom she swore she would never date. They continued their engagement while she completed her advanced degree and moved to Austin to work for URS and he was stationed in Japan. She visited him multiple times and they were formally married on August 26th, 2005 in Yokosuka, Japan. They were married in the church on October 8th, 2005 in College Station, TX and enjoyed celebrating 2 anniversaries each year.

Upon getting married, she promptly moved to Naples, Italy for 2 years and did not fail to make an impact on the lives of those around her. She became active in the Military Community Youth Ministry program where she led a girl’s bible study and she twice led the high school church group on a 2-week mission trip to Slovakia. She and her husband also took every opportunity to see the world around them, traveling all over Europe and the Mediterranean.

In 2007 she moved backed to the USA with a 6-month stop in Rhode Island. Even in this short time, she still made an impact on others while working with middle and high school girls’ youth programs in the church. After a cross-country road trip, Jackie and Durward moved to San Diego for his next assignment.

In San Diego, she quickly began work at NAVFAC and got involved with Junior League and the church, eventually ending up at Northminster Presbyterian Church where she played guitar in their band. Early in her time in San Diego, Jackie decided that she needed to become healthier and she purchased at a fundraiser a membership to a boxing/MMA gym, dragging her husband with her. After a trip to Africa in 2009, Jackie decided that the cardio boxing classes were not enough and found her first true athletic passion since playing tennis in high school – Muay Thai (Thai Kickboxing). Like anything else she did, she jumped in 100%, never settling for less from herself or others.

Showing her compassion for those in need, she volunteered to go to Haiti for earthquake relief efforts through her command in 2010. Throughout the next year, she transformed herself into a finely tuned endurance/combat sports athlete loosing 80 lbs in the process. In the meantime, she decided that she and her husband should become marathoners, signing them up for the Big Sur Marathon in 2011. Unfortunately she tore her ACL overtraining for 2 endurance sports at the same time delaying both her Muay Thai amateur debut and the marathon by a year. In the meantime (with a torn ACL), Jackie went to Thailand to train exclusively for Muay Thai for 2 weeks with a Christian missionary group before Durward met her for 2-weeks of travel in Cambodia and Thailand.

After having ACL surgery and a follow-on surgery in 2011, only 5 months after the second operation she completed the 2102 Big Sur Marathon well ahead of her husband. She began cycling that June and competed in her first race in August. In the meantime she won her first amateur Muay Thai fight, but by then she was hooked on riding her bike. She joined a team and invited other interested women in the area to race with her. She saw lots of women riding socially and wondered why they did not race. She realized they only needed to be invited. She raced every weekend possible starting in February, including 3 weekends in AZ because that is where the entry-level women’s races were. She even raced with the men’s fields because she knew it would make her better (and she could race more). After being on her bike for less than 9 months she reached the next category upgrade and decided to give track racing a try. She quickly realized that track racing is where her passion in cycling was. Not seeing a lot of opportunities for women’s racing on the track, she pushed for a women’s field at least once a month at the San Diego Velodrome. She left us after a freak accident on the track during a race; she had never looked happier racing before the accident.

In addition to her athletic endeavors, Jackie displayed a multitude of talents – she played guitar in the church band, was a committee chair for Junior League of San Diego, was a Class Agent for the Class of 2002 at Texas A&M, and the social program chair for the San Diego Aggie Club.

Jackie believed that she could accomplish whatever she put her mind to – with determination and hard work anything was possible, whether it be loosing weight, organizing an event, or empowering others. She was avid about reaching out to others and inviting the un-invited to participate. She always looked out for those around her, and in her last act, she saved the lives of six people through the donation of seven of her organs. Jackie didn’t do anything partway and was passionate about all of her endeavors. To Jackie there were no strangers, only potential friends. Jackie understood God’s love and shared it with everyone she met.

Condolences

  1. Thought Durward might like to know that her influence is still being felt and missed at Navy BRAC. I was just requested to review an environmental remediation work plan that will implement remedial action technology that Jackie pushed for at Hunters Point Shipyard. It reminded me of her. Her vision has emerged as the only viable technology at this site. When she first recommended it, it was almost inevitable that another technology, that ultimately would not have worked, was the overwhelming choice. Jackie new better.

    Carl
