Jim Cliburn

James Robert (Jim) Cliburn, a loving husband, father, Papa, and coach, was taken into the arms of our Loving Savior on August 6, 2017.   Family and friends are invited to come celebrate his life at a memorial service set for 11 a.m. Saturday, August 12, 2017, at First Baptist Church in Bryan. Guests are invited to a catered meal at the church immediately following the service. A graveside interment for his family will follow at Denson Cemetery in Grapeland, Texas.

He was born in Palestine, Texas on June 28th, 1947 to B.C. Cliburn and Wessie Fitchett Cliburn.  After graduating from Grapeland High School, Jim married his high school sweetheart Linda Kay Allen. Upon graduation from the University of North Texas, he coached at Spring Branch Independent School District for seven years, followed by three year stints at both Hardin High School and Hampshire-Fannett High School.  During those years, he and Linda were blessed with two children, Jennifer Kay and Chad Russell. The family moved to Corpus Christi in 1984 where Jim coached football for 30 years at Calallen High School. While there, he positively influenced and impacted the lives of hundreds of players and students by demanding nothing less than excellence while at the same time sharing the love of Jesus Christ.  Jim was named Coach of the Year in District 30 4-A in 1999, becoming the first assistant coach to ever receive the award. He was later recognized for his outstanding contributions to Calallen High School when the school’s weight room was named in his honor.  In 2015 he was inducted into the Coastal Bend Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

After retiring in 2014, Jim and Linda moved to College Station, Texas where he served as a deacon at First Baptist Church, Bryan and was a member of the College Station Noon Lions Club.  During his retirement years, he enjoyed saltwater fishing at the Land Cut, Friday night football games with friends, attending granddaughters’ dance recitals, and throwing the ball with grandson Conoly.

Jim is survived by his wife of 49 years, Linda Cliburn; daughter, Jennifer and her husband Greg Griffin of Sugar Land, Texas; son, Chad and his wife Elizabeth Cliburn of Boerne, Texas; four grandchildren, Bailey (10) and Peyton (7) of Sugar Land, Texas, Eloise (5) and Conoly James (2) of Boerne, Texas; brother, Mike Cliburn of Palestine, Texas; and several brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews.

The family would like to acknowledge with appreciation the caring support of the wonderful staffs at MD Anderson Hospital and Hospice Brazos Valley. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in Jim’s memory to MD Anderson Cancer Center at gifts.mdanderson.org, or to Hospice Brazos Valley at 502 W. 26th St., Bryan TX 77803.

Linda, Jennifer, Chad and family, words simply cannot express my sorrow at your loss. I know from personal experience what you are feeling at this time. Our loss is Heaven’s gain. We grieve for ourselves, but Jim is better now than he ever was in this life. He now rests safely in Heaven where he will receive all the promises of God for a good and faithful servant. We will see him again! Praise the Lord for his perfect love!

Condolence from Pastor Jack Willoughby, DMIN on August 7th, 2017 4:47 pm

Jim Cliburn was one of the finest men I have ever had the privilege and honor to serve with in a church setting. He was a deacon, a friend, and encourager. He seldom spoke during meetings, but when he did, everyone listened. Jim was respected and loved by all because he was real in his faith, firm in his commitments, and true to his word. He once told me that his greatest hope after retirement was to visit people in nursing homes, care for widows, and minister to those facing long-term illness. Though I know that Jim is celebrating in the presence of the Lord, I find a grief in my heart that is difficult to express with words. Praying God’s comfort for Linda, Jennifer, Chad, and family.

Condolence from Jeff Baxter on August 7th, 2017 4:58 pm

Condolence from Dr. Michael J. Sandroussi on August 7th, 2017 5:12 pm

Jim was a wonderful man who cared most of all for his family and then his students at CHS. We lost a great man when we lost Jim, his commitment to life , always being the best that he could be on a daily basis set the tone for his students, colleagues and most of all the CHS administrators. His “can do ” positive attitude propelled CHS into the highest level of achievement both in academics & extracurricular activities. It was an honor to work side by side with this educator!

Linda, Jennifer and Chad, we are all saddened by the loss of Coach. He was such a wonderful man both on and off the field and in and out of the classroom. He was such a wonderful mentor to so many young people in Calallen. He truly worked into these kids hearts and was a true disciple of Christ while doing it. It was a an honor to have known him. He is surely enjoying the realms of heaven now. God be with you all. Be blessed.

Condolence from Charlene Dietrich on August 7th, 2017 6:18 pm

I count knowing and teaching with Jim as a blessing in my teaching career. He expected much from himself and as much from his students and players. What a positive impact he had on everyone who met him. He was an institution on the Calallen football sidelines as he was in the classroom. His ready smile, his sense of humor and his love of “service above self” endeared him to all who knew him. May God bring his family peace and comfort.

I can still hear his voice and even though I had not seen him in years I thought about him and his much loved wife, friend, and soul mate, Linda Kay Allen Cliburn. Condolence from Joe Long on August 9th, 2017 5:18 pm

Linda, Jim was a senior when I was in the 8th grade. Even though he was on the high school varsity football team, he took time to come to a few of our junior high practices. I remember his patience with us, along with his instructions on how to play the game. Looking back, he wasn’t just talking football, but the game of life.

Even back then (50+ years), I could see Jim had the calling to be a coach. Although he was in high school, he treated me as an equal, and not as a subordinate. Jim had the ability to talk to anyone without patronizing them. He was a great communicator.

The world is a better place because of Jim Cliburn! He will be missed tremendously.

Jim Cliburn was my Coach. And my History teacher at Memorial High School. At the time, he was a real badass, and he was hard on us. But with time, I miss him. His was the way of making his football players get better than they were. To achieve something greater than we thought we could do. He was my Coach. I just wish that I had a chance to catch up with him as an adult. He’d still probably make me do windsprints. God Bless You, Coach Cliburn, despite the fact that you tortured your boys into becoming men. For most of us, it worked. Well done, Coach. We passed the test.

Condolence from Byron Blalock on August 11th, 2019 4:06 pm

My first coaching/teaching job was at Hardin in 1980. Jim Cliburn was the Head Coach that hired me. I learned so much from Jim Cliburn. He was a tremendous mentor in so many ways. I was very lucky to have known him.
