John was born on July 29, 1961, in Gonzales, Texas, to Martin and Nell Rightmer. He graduated from Luling High School in 1979 and worked at a number of occupations including paper boy, grocery sacker, yard man, janitor, painter, oil field worker, mechanic, chicken farmer, gold miner, and coal miner just to name a few. He worked in the coal-mining business for the past 30 years but often had a side business going at the same time. He enjoyed learning how to do new things all the time and his latest hobby was making leather goods. He made belts, wallets, and knife scabbards for all his friends and family in his spare time.
John cherished his family especially his sons Ross and David. They are left with many treasured memories of time spent with their Dad hunting, fishing, boating, water-skiing, making a haunted house every Halloween for the neighborhood kids, and building a dirt bicycle track through the woods surrounding the neighborhood. He taught his kids and their friends how to fix their bikes and then how to fix their pick-ups when they were older. John’s house was a place to take anything that needed fixing. He could do anything and fix anything and would teach others how to do it. John was what most people would call “a character.” John loved being a jokester and a prankster, and never failed to get all those around him laughing. His laughter and love for life was infectious and it was impossible to be in a bad mood in his presence. He was the life of the party and the center of attention wherever he went. John’s loss will leave a huge void for all those that he leaves behind.
He is survived by his sons, Ross and David Rightmer, and their mother Lezlie Rightmer all of Bryan; his mother, Nell Rightmer of Luling; three sisters, Margaret Stach and husband Darryl of Parks, LA, Martha Mosier and husband Robert of College Station, and Mary Nell Knox and husband Kirby of Harwood. He also leaves behind his love of the last several years Leah Holland, his life-long best friend Jack Vick, Jr., numerous nieces and nephews, and many friends.
His father Martin Ross Rightmer preceded him in death.
Honoring John’s life are family and friends serving as Pallbearers Ross Rightmer, David Rightmer, Jack Vick, Jr., Robert Mosier, Sr., Richard Sanders, Lyle Yarborough, David Newcomb, Colton Campbell, Rider Burlin, and Chandler Macek.
John’s heart was truly about caring for others, his family asked that memorial contributions in his memory be made to Hospice Brazos Valley, 502 West 26th Street, Bryan, Texas 77803
