Larry Lee Burkhalter
July 16, 1946 – September 22, 2017

Larry Burkhalter, 71, of Hearne, Texas, passed away on Friday, September 22, 2017 in Bryan. A visitation will begin at 6 to 8 pm, Monday, September 25, 2017 at the funeral center. His Life Legacy Tribute Service will begin at 1:30 pm, Tuesday, September 26, 2017 at the funeral center. Interment will follow in Oaklawn Cemetery in Somerville. Life Legacy Services are in the care of Callaway-Jones Funeral and Cremation Centers Bryan-College Station.

Larry Burkhalter was born on July 16, 1946 in Bryan, Texas to Gilbert Lee Burkhalter and Ruby Nadine Andrus Burkhalter. Larry was a man who wore many hats, besides working at GATX for 31 years he became an ordained minister in 1978 and throughout the remainder of his life he spent his time pastoring area churches and spreading the Gospel on mission trips abroad. He and Mary also had a soft spot when it came to children, which led them to foster 7 precious babies as well as being guardians to several more later on. In 1991 Larry became a Dandy, which was his favorite hat to wear. Larry always had time for a funny story and if he thought that he could get away with it, you could end up on the receiving end of a prank or even a series of pranks. So many hats and so many more things that could be said, but to sum it all up Larry lived a full life serving the Lord and will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved him. He married his teenage sweet heart Mary Ruth Kueck on July 8, 1964 in Bryan just behind the original Callaway-Jones Funeral Home.

His parents Gilbert and Ruby; three brothers and two sisters, all precede him in death.

Surviving Larry are his wife of 53 years, Mary Ruth Burkhalter; his son, Eric Burkhalter and wife, Nancy; his daughter Melissa Engleman and husband, Mike; his brother, Jimmy Burkhalter and wife, Rita; his sisters, Linda Sue Munson and her husband, Charlie, and Florence Thomason; his five grandchildren Ami, Chase, Noah, Emilie, and Tiffany; his two great-grandchildren Koy and Blake; and other relatives.

Condolence from David Post on September 25th, 2017 9:42 pm

I am sad that Larry is not with us. Mary, my family has been lifting you and your family up in our prayers. I knew that Brother Larry genuinely cared about me just from being in his presence. He was very kind. I’ve debated on whether he was the most serious funny man that I knew, or the funniest serious man I knew. Probably the latter. His sense of humor was a far piece from pedestrian.
I wonder if the awe of Heaven and Yahweh’s presence ever subside, or if Larry and my dad are permitted to chum around and swap stories early on in such a holy place. The thought does seem pleasant to me that would have the opportunity to visit with one another. I could never quite put my finger on it, but they had something in common. Maybe it was that Ray, Jr. once lied to a stranger by claiming to be a preacher, and that Larry was an unlikely and uncommon preacher.
Whatever the case, Larry Burkhalter has been a longsuffering instrument of our Lord, and has made an indelible and uncommon mark upon the countless lives he has touched.

Mary,
We are so sorry for your loss. Larry was so kind and I enjoyed visiting with him when I picked up cakes. He shared with me the history of one of your classic cars in the yard one day when we were talking about old cars.
Debra, myself and our family will keep you in our prayers during this difficult time.
