Our long goodbye is over with the passing of Marie Hamblin at age 91 on Saturday, January 11, 2014. Born on the farm in Wortham, Texas on March 16, 1922, she had an amazing journey from rural Texas to the battlefields of World War II in the Pacific to her role as wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother to a loving family.
Marie moved with her family to Houston in 1930 and then to Ladonia in the midst of the Great Depression when her father lost his job in Houston. She talked often of her days in Ladonia and of the big white farm house her family shared with her Aunt and Uncle. One of her memories of those years was helping to pick cotton at 10 years old and finding a shady spot to take a nap when she got tired.
She graduated from Ladonia High School in 1939 and started nurses training at Memorial Hospital in Houston that same year, due to the kindness and generosity of her Aunt Hessie who saw promise in Marie. When she graduated in 1944 she entered the U.S. Navy as an Ensign and traveled to San Diego for duty at the Naval Hospital. She was assigned to Fleet Hospital 115 on Guam and went overseas in early 1945. Sixty years later she would still get tears in her eyes when talking about caring for the wounded from the Battle of Iwo Jima.
Following the war Marie returned to Houston where she met and married Bill Hamblin in 1947. Together they raised three sons living first in the South Park area and then in Spring Branch from 1959 until 1979. Following Bill’s retirement in 1978 she enjoyed travels throughout the U.S. in their RV’s, along with cruises and a trip to the Holy Land. They lived in Kingsland, Pharr and Brenham until Bill’s passing in 2012.
Marie was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2005, but even when she no longer knew friends or family, her kind and gentle spirit still shone through. She had a strong faith and was the rock in our family through good times and bad.
Marie is survived by her three sons, James of Houston, Texas; David of Ramona, California; Donald of College Station, Texas; six grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
She was pre-deceased by her parents John and Myrtle Winn, sisters Juanita and June, brother Weldon, husband Bill Hamblin, and grandson Timothy.
Funeral services will be held on January 15, 2014 at 2 p.m. at the College Station Memorial Cemetery Chapel with full military honors.
