Marvin Lee Moss, Sr.

January 6, 1930 – November 14, 2019

On Thursday, November 14, 2019 Marvin Lee Moss, Sr., 89, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.  A celebration of his life will be held Tuesday, November 19, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at Callaway-Jones Funeral Center in Bryan.  A time to visit with Marvin’s family and friends will follow immediately after the service in the Center’s Legacy Lounge.

Marvin was born in Olustee, Oklahoma to Juda Sarah (Evins) and Chesley C. Moss.  The family moved to McAllen, Texas for most of his growing up years.  After high school in Kerrville, Marvin began his career in the telephone industry.  On June 11, 1949 he and Barbara Jean Scurlock eloped to Ft. Davis and were married.  After living in Alpine a short while, the couple moved to San Marcos where they were blessed with five children:  Melinda Lee (died at birth), Marvin Lee, Jr. (Sonny), William David (Bill), Timothy Paul (Tim), and Rebecca Sue (Becky).  Although Marvin and Barbara’s marriage came to an end, he remained very active and involved in the lives of his children.

On February 4, 1967 Marvin married Clara Wilson Deviney who also had three children (Elaina, Rob and Carla) and together they raised a blended family of seven children that would grow into the large family it is today.  Marvin worked for the San Marcos Telephone Company a total of 19 years as Plant Engineer.  In 1969, he was recruited by the Texas A&M University Engineering Extension Service to become an instructor in the Texas Telephone Technician’s Training Program.  And so also began “life at the lake” in Bryan, Texas.  The family full of children spent many happy weekends and holidays at the little house on the lake from that day forward. Marvin taught at TEEX for the remainder of his career, retiring on January 31, 1992.

Throughout his life, Marvin Moss was a friend and a “good Samaritan” to all.  He did not pass by a person in need without offering his services to help. He was a gifted mechanic and everyone’s “go to” guy when anything at all was broken.  He was patient, kind and generous with his time and skill to family, friends, and strangers alike.  He embodied the command of our Lord Jesus Christ to “love your neighbor as yourself”.

Marvin is preceded in death by his parents; four sisters and one brother; daughter, Melinda; and his eldest son, Sonny.  He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Clara Moss; his children, Bill Moss and wife Judy, Tim Moss and wife Sally, Becky Moss Albiol and husband Chuck, Elaina Deviney Glockzin and husband Emanuel, Rob Deviney and wife Carol, Carla Deviney Dileo and husband Luke.

He is also survived by his grandchildren, Jason Moss and wife Renee, Matthew Moss, along with their mother, Betsy Moss, and Sonny’s long-time friend Clare Kittle,  David Moss and wife Alicia, Ryan Moss and wife Jessica, Timothy Moss, Alisa Moss Hernandez and husband Alonzo, Jennifer Slisz Pierce and husband Dave, Julie Slisz Gastler and husband Robert, Josh Slisz and wife Ashley, Jared Slisz and Jessie O’Neal, Betsy Glockzin Brown and husband Bryan, Vicky Glockzin Kramer and husband Pete, Marsha Deviney Godeaux and husband Jason, Trey Deviney and wife Kelly, Sarah Dileo Bruedigan and husband Justin, and Sam Dileo and wife Maryssa.  Of this very large family, Marvin is also survived by 36 great-grandchildren who will be told the awesome stories of their Papa in the years to come and of his legacy of service to others.

The family would like to thank Traditions Home Health Care and Traditions Hospice Care for their sweet and loving care of Marvin in the last year.  A special note of thanks to his personal caregiver, Annette, for her devotion to him in the latter months of his life.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 7272 Greenville Ave., Dallas, TX 75231

Services are in the care of Callaway-Jones Funeral and Cremation Centers, Bryan-College Station.

  5. We have lost a great neighbor and friend but Heaven has gained an angel. Mr. Moss was always there for us in our time of need and will be truly missed. Our prayers and deepest sympathy goes out to all the family.

  6. To the dear Moss family,
Marvin was a brilliant jewel to the Dillard family! He was always there to help us with whatever project we had going on and always with a smile on his face. At the church, it was always “let’s ask Marvin. He’ll know the answer.” Or if there was a get-together he and Clara were always right there serving. A true model of Christian servanthood. May all of you feel our Lord’s comfort at this time.
