Norma Hickman Jenkins, 78, of Bryan, passed on August 16, 2015 in her home. A Life Tribute Service will be held at 6:30pm, Thursday, August 20, 2015 at Central Baptist Church, 1991 FM 158, College Station. Her Church family and friends will be providing a dinner at Central Baptist directly following the service. Cremation services are in the care of Callaway-Jones Funeral Home and Crematory.

Norma Jean Drews was born to Alfred and Josephine McKay Drews on September 1, 1936 in Chicago, Ill. She was married to her first husband James Russell Hickman, for 50 years. She married her good friend Jackie Jenkins on July 12, 2008 and was married 3 1/2 years. She loved her three boys and provided a wonderful home for them. Her boys blessed her with ten grandchildren and eleven great-grand children. She was an accountant for approximately 35 years with Durst, Woods, & Milburger Firm. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She loved God and her church-family and attended church as often as she could, at Central Baptist Church.

Let’s start by saying; this paper is not big enough to tell everything there is to know about our Mother, Norma Hickman Jenkins. She was and always will be an inspiration to all she came in contact with. A few of her milestones are as follows: She obtained her Associates degree in Accounting from Blinn College at age 55. At age 60 she rode a mechanical bull for 8 seconds. At age 65 she went skydiving. At 70 she went on a zip line course in Tennessee and at age 76 she fell off of her roof sweeping leaves!

Her love of family, friends, and even strangers, was boundless. She even invited her car mechanic to one of the Drews family reunions! She traveled to San Antonio to attend her niece’s best friend’s graduation from the Air Force Academy. She looked forward, every year, to travel back to Indiana, to visit with classmates from Tyner High School.
Her unending love touched so many lives.

Our Mother was the absolute most loving, caring, forgiving woman you will ever have the pleasure of meeting, as many of you know. While we don’t know why God chose to take her at this time, let it be known without any doubt, God has his most perfect angel with him! Mom was very active with her church family and friends. She never met a stranger and was the family matriarch. She was generous almost to a fault. For all reading this, know that on behalf of her sons, our hearts and thoughts are out to you all as well.

We will hold a private burial service for immediate family at a later date, because with her entire family, the cemetery isn’t nearly big enough to hold all of you! Mom will be missed. Thank you everyone for your thoughts and prayers.

Preceding her in death were her parents, her husbands, James Russell Hickman and Jackie Jenkins, her sister Damaris Smith Pruett, and her nephews, Steven Smith and Cameron Clark, and great-grandson James Russell Hickman III.

She is survived by her sons Cole James Hickman, Kit Russell Hickman and his wife Brenda, Craig Allen Hickman and his wife Branda; her ten grandchildren and eleven great-grand children; her brothers David Drews and John Drews; her sister Linda Drews Benjamin; her nieces and nephews and other close friends.

Norma’s family asked that memorial donations be given to the Wounded Warrior Project, https://support.woundedwarriorproject.org in lieu of flowers.

The first people we met at the ranch in Normangee were Norma and Jim, and their children when we visited over 40 years ago. Norma and her family always made us feel welcome, and the bonds between us lasted over 40 years. Friendships were forever with Norma. We will miss her smile, her welcome come on in, but above all, the way we felt in her presence, like family. God gained a very special angel. God bless Cole, Kit, and Craig, all her family, as y’all celebrate your Mom’s amazing life, yet mourn her passing. Know that she will be missed by her Florida family as well.

I am saddened and shocked to hear of the passing of my new friend, Norma. We only met six months ago at Planet Fitness of all places! She always had a smile on her face and encouraged me to “pump iron”. I am going to miss that beautiful, smiling face. My condolences to her family.

Surprised and saddened with the news. The ’50s were so long ago, but I so remember the friends of those days. Norma was a good friend and I always remember her smiling and with such life! And now I’m even more blessed to think I was able, because she was up from Texas, to spend time with her at the Tyner girls gathering this spring. Praying for those sons of hers, and grandchildren and great grandchildren. May the peace of God and the comfort of the Holy Spirit keep your hearts and minds in this time of grief.

Condolence from Beverly Markowski on August 20th, 2015 8:57 pm

Norma invited anyone who wanted to witness her Tandem Jump out to Coulter Field to celebrate her 65th birthday and I couldn’t resist. Once their I recognized her pilot and he said I could pay to go up with him. I did and took pictures of Norma up behind my head as I sat in the co-pilots seat. We had many chuckles about her experience. Just recently we reunited for monthly lunches and talked about old times. Her obituary was spot on describing a wonderful friend to all. I was privileged to be among those. See you one day soon Norma. Maybe our mansions will be close to each other.

Dear Kit, Cole, Craig and families. Words cannot express the deep sadness I feel for the passing of Aunt Norma. She will never be forgotten here in Nebraska. She had been sending me pictures of the families and helping me get to know who is who. I will never forget her infectious laugh. And when you put her and Uncle Jim together with they’re sense of humor and my cheeks hurt from laughing so much. I am blessed to have known such a woman and am privileged to have been able to call her my Aunt. Love from the Hickmans here in Nebraska. Mary Ann (Hickman) Myers & Mike, Vicki (Hickman) Wulf & Stan, John & Becky Hickman and Dave & Nui Hickman.
