Dan L. Cox went to be with the Lord on December 5, 2025, after a long battle with Parkinson's Disease. Born, Danny Lyle Cox, October 17, 1948, in Wheelwright, Kentucky, to Orville Haywood "Ted" and Mildred Louise "Mickie" Cox, Dan got to Texas as fast as he could when his family moved to Dallas for his father to attend SMU on the GI Bill. An only child, Dan was a hardworking "latchkey kid," holding numerous jobs from paperboy to concrete mixer driver.
A graduate of Bryan Adams High School, Dan earned a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering (1971) and an M.B.A. (1973) from The University of Texas at Austin, where he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon and served on the Student Senate. He married Bryna, whom he met in graduate school and loved from the moment he saw her, in August 1973. They were married for over 52 years.
After marrying, Dan became a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and worked at Arthur Andersen & Co. in Houston. In 1979, he co-founded Texas Medical Products (later Surgimedics) with Dr. Denton Cooley, moving the headquarters to The Woodlands in 1988. Following its sale in 1999, Dan held several executive and consulting roles.
A dedicated community servant, Dan was a Rotary Club of The Woodlands President (1994-1995) and a Roll of Fame inductee. He served on numerous boards, including the American Heart Association, the Arthritis Foundation (President 1999), and was a 30-year Trustee and Finance Committee member for The Woodlands Methodist Church, chairing the 2001 facility building committee. He was highly active in Conroe Independent School District bond elections and planning. In 2003, he became the Chief Financial Officer for Conroe ISD. During his 13-year tenure he helped acquire land and oversee the construction of more than a dozen schools. In 2009, he was honored as one of The Woodlands' People of the Year.
Dan also loved golf, achieving five "Hole in One's" in his lifetime. He is survived by his wife, Bryna; his three daughters and their husbands; and nine grandchildren: Katherine and Justin Kleemann and their children Ryann, Caroline, and Annie; Leslie and Austin Evetts and their children Reese and Sadie; and Kelly and Josh Owen and their children Riley, Sofi, Jack, and Brandon.
Dan was a proud husband, father, and grandfather, and lived a wonderful life of service, love, and faith. A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, December 12 at 1 PM at The Woodlands Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Woodlands Methodist Church Foundation, the Conroe ISD Education Foundation, or a charity of choice.
