Dorothy Jean Matura

March 9, 1942 — September 26, 2025

Wheelock, TX

Dorothy passed away on Friday September 26, 2025, after a brief illness. Dorothy was born in Bryan, Texas on March 9, 1942 to John D. and Avis I. Zweifel. Dorothy attended the Wheelock School until the family moved to Bryan. She graduated from Stephen F. Austin High School in 1960. Dorothy attended Sam Houston State Teachers College in Huntsville, Texas. She met the love of her life Emil J. Matura through mutual friends. They married on January 8, 1961. They welcomed their first of three daughters, Avis Ann in January of 1962. Followed by twin girls in May of 1967, Dee Ann and Lea Ann. Dorothy was a homemaker. The only job she ever wanted was to be a wife, and mother.

In 1974 Dorothy and Emil built a home in Wheelock and raised their girls on the land where Dorothy was raised. Together they made a good life for themselves and their daughters. All three daughters graduated from Texas A&M University. She loved whatever school, team, color, or sport her children and grandchildren were supporting.

Dorothy was known as Dorothy, Dottie, Dot, Gram and most affectionately as Honey by her late husband Emil. She kept the family grounded and always had the sage advice you needed.

Dorothy is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Avis and Todd Nichols of Bryan, Dee Ann and Kyle Jones of Bryan, and Lea Ann Matura, PhD. of Philadelphia, PA. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Hayley Nichols and Stephen Dickson, Joseph Nichols, Dalton Jones, and Darby and Nicholas Ogg. She is also survived by her sister Johnnie Lou Gordy and nephew David and wife Kristi Gordy of Austin, Texas and nieces Judy and Skip Pustejovsky of Altair, Texas, Audrey Smyth of Schulenburg, Texas, Connie and Rudy Herrera of Austin, Texas and nephews Johnny and Beverly Kotrla of Katy, Texas, and Larry and Mary Kotrla.

Dorothy is preceded in death by her husband of 63 years Emil Matura, and her parents John and Avis Zweifel. Pallbearers will Todd Nichols, Kyle Jones, Stephen Dickson, Joseph Nichols, Dalton Jones, and Nicholas Ogg.

The family would like to express their heart-felt thanks to those that cared for and ministered to Dorothy during her illness: Dr. Dhaduk and his staff, the staff at CHI St. Joseph Hospital. The staff at Legacy Nursing and Rehabilitation of Bryan was amazing. A special thank you to Monsignor John McCaffrey.
