Obituary

Elsie Imogene Gustavus, a beloved matriarch and dedicated individual, passed away peacefully in Bryan, Texas, on March 1 2026, at the age of 92. Born on August 4, 1933, in Madisonville, Texas, Elsie was a woman of unwavering faith and kindness, who embraced the simplicity of life with a no-frills approach.

After graduating from high school in 1950, Elsie embarked on a commendable career with Southwestern Bell Telephone, which later became Verizon. She dedicated an impressive 39 years to her work before retiring, exemplifying steadfastness and professionalism throughout her career. Elsie was not only an industrious worker but also a voracious reader, constantly educating herself and expanding her knowledge.

A cherished member of her community, Elsie held a deep commitment to her church, Northview Baptist Church, where she taught pre-school Sunday school for many years, later leading the Ladies Sunday school class. Elsie’s passion for sharing her faith and knowledge enriched the lives of those around her, and her contributions were met with deep appreciation and love.

Family held a special place in Elsie's heart. She was a devoted mother to her son Galen Gustavus and his spouse Lawanna Gustavus, as well as a proud great-grandmother to Elliott Locke and Emily Herbrich, and her spouse Charlie. Elsie worked diligently to ensure that the history of her family was preserved, making notes about everything and nurturing the connections between generations. Her grandchildren and sisters were of utmost importance to her.

Elsie will be remembered for her warm spirit and her ability to touch lives with her genuine kindness. She had a strong personality, not afraid to voice her thoughts, and always approached life with a sense of practicality. Elsie's love for reading the newspaper and clipping articles to share with others highlighted her keen interest in the world around her.

She leaves behind cherished memories for her family and friends, including her late husband, Charles Gustavus, and her deceased grandchildren, Brandon Russell Gustavus and Amber Nicole Gustavus Locke. Elsie is also preceded in death by her sisters, Nina Lou McCaig, Annie Lee Rogers, and Vivian Clarice Wilson.

A visitation for Elsie will be held on March 7, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 10:30 AM, followed by a funeral service beginning at 10:30 AM until 11:30 AM at Callaway-Jones Funeral Home and Crematory in Bryan, Texas.

Elsie Imogene Gustavus’s legacy of love, faith, and dedication will be dearly missed by all who knew her. Her spirit, which was a beacon of strength and compassion, will continue to inspire those she leaves behind.
