Obituary

Fred Wright initially moved to College Station in the 1950’s when his father was stationed at the Bryan Air Force Base. He subsequently returned to College Station, where he met Cathy Corny in 1963, and they married in 1964, beginning a lifelong partnership and raising their family together.

Fred worked as a printer for more than 35 years. He enjoyed operating the presses and spent the majority of his tenure at the Texas A&M Printing Center. Mixing inks, producing graduation programs, football programs, and many other university publications, he took great pride in his work and formed many lifelong friendships throughout his career.

Fred had a passion for cars, especially racing them. He and Cathy purchased a 1964 Plymouth Sport Fury and, together with their racing friends, spent many weekends at the track enjoying the excitement and camaraderie of drag racing. Over the years, Fred acquired numerous project cars, but the Plymouth remained his favorite and stayed with him throughout his life.

Spending time outdoors and traveling were an important part of his life. He enjoyed target shooting with his sons, Richard and Craig, along with trips to go deer hunting in Mason, Texas. He loved visiting his brother in Alaska, and travelling with Cathy to see sights all across the United States. They particularly enjoyed driving all over Big Bend and west Texas. .At home, family weekends were often centered around barbecue gatherings, with Fred proudly handling “all the BBQ”.

Fred deeply loved his grandchildren and cherished every opportunity to spend time with them.

After retiring from Texas A&M, Fred enjoyed delivering vehicles to dealerships throughout Texas. Known as an excellent driver, he appreciated the opportunity to stay on the road. When he wasn’t driving, you could likely find him with the local “coffee crew” at McDonald’s, Shipley Do-Nuts, or Whataburger talking about current events, NASCAR, or reminiscing about feats in years past.

Fred was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Cathy; his infant daughter Leah, his father, James; his mother, Dorothy; his brother, Jim; his grandson, Christopher; his sister-in-law, Margie George; his brother-in-law, Sam George; his sister-in-law, Lynn Seale; and his brother-in-law, Bobby Seale.

He is survived by his daughter, Christy Van Winkle and husband Alan; his son, Richard Wright; his son, Craig Wright; his brother Bob Wright and wife Sharon, brother Steve Wright; grandson, Jarrod; his granddaughter, Jessica Hadley and husband Derrick; his granddaughter, Frankie Wright; his grandsons, Phoenix Wright, Benjamin Wright, and William Wright; great grandchildren Emersyn Hadley, Toni Van Winkle, Brooks Hadley and Porter Van Winkle, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
