Jewell “Winell” (Fleming) Morgan, 89, of Bryan, Texas, peacefully passed into the arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on the evening of Wednesday, November 13, 2024. She passed away in Legacy Nursing & Rehabilitation in Bryan, with her daughter by her side.
Friends and family are invited to her Celebration of Life at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, at Callaway-Jones Funeral Center in Bryan, with Pastor Tim Skaggs officiating. The family-only interment service will take place at Rest Ever Memorial Park Cemetery in Bryan, at 10:00 a.m., preceding the Celebration of Life. All services are in the care of Callaway-Jones Funeral and Cremation Centers of Bryan-College Station.
Winell was born December 24, 1934, in Pace (Santa Rosa County), Florida, to Carlos C. and Jessie L. (McCranie) Fleming, and was the third of their five children. Her childhood years were spent in Munson, FL. She and her family later moved to Milton, FL, where she graduated from Milton High School in 1952 and was voted “Most Beautiful.”
Winell met her handsome sailor in Milton, Florida, while he was serving in the U.S. Navy at Whiting Field in Pensacola, Florida. They were married at the First Baptist Church of Milton on April 22, 1953. They made their home in Norfolk, VA, where Melvin was stationed at the naval air base. After completion of his naval service, Melvin and Winell moved to Bryan, TX, where they were blessed in 1956, with a daughter, Karen, and in 1960, with a son, Tim.
In 1964, the family moved to Pensacola, FL, before returning to Texas in 1965. They lived in Houston until 1969, when they settled in Conroe, TX. Winell was employed with Conroe ISD 1969-1989. In 1989, Melvin and Winell moved back to Bryan, to be closer to their grandchildren. There, Winell continued her employment in education, with Bryan ISD (Sam Rayburn Intermediate School) and College Station ISD (Rock Prairie Elementary School) from where she retired in 1998.
Winell was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Mel Morgan; her parents; brothers,Bonceil Fleming, Carlos C. “Sonny” Fleming; sisters, Noma Lee (Fleming) Barnhill, Willow Dean Fleming; son-in-law, Jim “Bear” Bratsen, Jr.; brothers-in-law, Clay Barnhill, Merlen “Larry” Lawrence, Dalton Rice, Arnold Morgan, Leroy Villines, and Ralph Morgan; sisters-in-law, Wanda Lawrence, Margaret “Peggy” Fleming, Joan Fleming, Daisy Morgan, and Sandi Morgan; nieces, Sheilah (Barnhill) Harvey, Marge Ann (Fleming) Yeargin; nephews, David Fleming, John “Jackie” Fleming, Tracy Morgan.
Survivors include her daughter, Karen Bratsen of Bryan; son, Tim Morgan (Patricia) of Huntsville; brother-in-law, Raymond Morgan of College Station; sisters-in-law, Norma Rice of College Station, Anna Villines of Bryan, and Leona Morgan of Bryan; grandchildren, Kade Bratsen (Sarah Hambrick) of College Station, Kendall (Morgan) Stevens (Kyle) of Magnolia, Kord Bratsen (Amanda) of College Station, Krey Bratsen (Michelle) of Bryan; great-granddaughter Kinley Stevens, great-grandsons Kase, Kole, & James Bratsen; along with multiple nieces and nephews.
