Joanne Bigham Chapman, a beloved matriarch, devoted friend, and compassionate community member, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 19, 2025, at her home in Bryan, Texas. She was 82 years old. Born on March 29, 1943, in Commerce, Texas, she was the cherished daughter of Lawrence and Louise Bigham.
Throughout her life, Joanne embraced her roles as a wife, mother, and Nana with unparalleled devotion. Her greatest joy came from her family—especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She made it a point to be present at their sporting events, school programs, and many cherished moments, always found cheering from the stands or beaming proudly in the audience. Weekend slumber parties at Nana’s were filled with laughter, love, and the freedom only a grandmother can offer, where rules were few and memories were made.
A woman of deep faith, Joanne’s spiritual journey greatly influenced the lives around her. She started and led a Bible study ministry in the local women’s prison, dedicating many years to spiritual outreach through her church and the wider community. Her heart especially went out to those in struggle; she walked alongside individuals battling addiction, offering support and hope as they sought healing and a fresh start. During the holiday season, she devoted her time to serving at homeless shelters, ensuring that no one felt forgotten or alone.
Joanne’s professional life included serving as a bus driver for Bryan ISD, an insurance salesperson, and working in travel ministry for the Community of Christ Church. Regardless of her role, she touched countless lives with her kindness and generosity.
She leaves behind a legacy infused with love, compassion, and unwavering faith that will continue through those who knew her and the family who adored her. Joanne is preceded in death by her parents, her son Mark Brunson, and her granddaughter Susan Brunson. She is survived by her loving husband of 50 years, Todd Chapman; daughters Andrea Schmidt and Leslie Dowling, along with her husband Randy; grandchildren Howard Peevey and his fiancé Melissa Perry, Chad Peevey and his wife Paige, Jack Riley, Nick Riley, and Mark Brunson and his wife LaQreisa Jude; and great-grandchildren Hayley Guajardo and Ryan Peevey.
Joanne's family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Traditions Hospice, their nurses, and care providers. Specifically Marcella Leija, D'Andrea, Michelle, Archie, Danny, Brad, Lauren, Chole, and Chelsea who were so wonderful and attentive.
