Lyndon William Kurtz

Lyndon William Kurtz, 82, of Bryan, Texas, passed away surrounded by family on August 16, 2025, at the Isle of Watercrest.

Lyndon was born on June 30, 1943, in Holland, Texas, to Lillie and Melvin Kurtz. At the age of three, he moved with his family to Rosenberg, Texas, where they lived on a farm. He graduated from Lamar High School in Rosenberg in 1961. He attended Wharton Junior College for two years before transferring to Texas A&M University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Economics in 1965. Later a Masters degree in Administration.

Lyndon met Gail in the summer of 1965 while visiting his childhood church with his parents. Gail was in town visiting her sister Caroline. Just six months later, they were engaged. Shortly after, Lyndon was drafted to serve in the Vietnam War as a corporal in the United States Marine Corps. After two years of combat, he was honorably discharged and awarded several medals, including Rifle Sharpshooter. Upon his return, on September 30, 1967, he married the love of his life, Gail Stock. Together they shared nearly 58 years of marriage.

After a brief time living and working in Houston, Lyndon and Gail settled in Bryan, Texas, where he began his lifelong career at Texas A&M University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. He served as Assistant to the Dean from 1969 to 1990 and then as Associate Director of Biomedical Sciences until 2002. He loved his work, especially counseling and recruiting students for veterinary medicine and biomedical careers. In 32 years, he missed only one graduation ceremony—the birth of his first grandson. Dean H. Richard Adams once remarked: “Mr. Kurtz made an indelible mark on the lives of so many college students at the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. He demonstrated the true meaning of the Marine Corps motto ‘Semper Fidelis’—always faithful.”

Lyndon lived a life of generosity. Many were blessed to receive his famous peanut brittle or a handcrafted wooden domino box, both made with great care. He also loved woodworking, hunting, and fishing—passions he developed as a young boy and shared with his sons on countless trips across Texas. For over 35 years, he hunted with the same group of close friends.

Since 1970, Lyndon was a devoted member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church, where he taught 5th grade Sunday school, served on committees, and chaperoned youth trips. He was known as patient and generous, never quick to anger or criticism. He gave freely of his talents, whether building playhouses for his grandchildren or helping his sons with projects. A man of few words but deep wisdom, when he spoke, people listened. Above all, he loved his family well.

Lyndon is survived by his loving wife, Gail Kurtz; sons Stephen Kurtz and wife Dershie of Boerne, Texas, and their children Kade and Karson; Jeff Kurtz and wife Leslie of College Station, Texas, and their children Kyle and Hope; and his brother Lenert Kurtz and wife Janet of Rosenberg, Texas. He is also survived by many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

A Worship Celebration in the Promised Hope of Resurrection to Eternal Life will be held on Saturday, August 23, 2025, at Our Saviors Lutheran Church, 1001 Woodcreek Drive, College Station, TX. Visitation with the family will begin at 10:30 a.m., followed by the Celebration at 11:00 a.m. A lunch reception will follow.
