Obituary

Mary “Lucia” Lind Bryan – wife, mother, friend, Broker – born November 17, 1936, passed from this life on March 20, 2026, ending a journey filled with love, knowledge, and generosity.

Mary was the 2nd of five children born and raised in Oak Park, Illinois, to Evelyn Borchardt and Paul B. Lind. During her formative years, Mary was active in ice skating and basketball and participated in numerous “neighborhood” plays and performances with her siblings and other neighborhood friends, the most memorable was the Circus.

Mary, following in her older sister Nancy’s footsteps, graduated from Oak Park/River Forest High School, Oak Park, IL, as Valedictorian in 1954. She went on to the University of Rochester (NY) where she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics in 1958, and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. This is where she initially met Ron while he was pursuing his PhD. Mary continued her education, obtaining her Master’s degree in Philosophy from Brown University in 1960. Upon completion of her Master’s, she moved across the country to California for a position with Rand Corporation and soon after decided to further her education and began PhD courses at University of California-Berkley, at the same time Ron was there in a post-doc position. While in graduate school, Ron and Mary married in Oak Park, IL on January 19,1963 and remained in California for Ron to finish his post-doc and Mary to continue her PhD studies and graduate teaching position.

In 1967, when Ron took a position at Texas A&M University in the physics department, Mary took a position as an instructor in the philosophy department. She was one of the first female instructors at Texas A&M at the same time women were first being admitted. Mary loved teaching, and she was very good at it, but as her family grew with the adoption of her daughter Phoebe 1973, (and 3 years later, Penny), her heart guided her in a different

direction, and she began what turned into a 50-year career as a Real Estate Broker in the Bryan, College Station and surround Brazos Valley area. She first worked for Century 21, George Green & Associates as a Realtor/Broker and later, Century 21, Green and Browne, Coldwell Banker, Browne and Associates, Ashford Square Realty, and then transitioned to her own Brokerage as Mary Lind Bryan, Broker, where she held her license active until November 2025. During her tenure as a Realtor/Broker she served as a Director of the MLS and on many Board of Realtor Committees.

In 1984, Mary became the first Broker in the Bryan-College Station Area to obtain her Certified Commercial Investment Member (CCIM) certification. Once certified, she began working closely with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) administering auctions for foreclosed properties, both commercial and residential, throughout the Brazos Valley. She had extensive involvement in numerous apartment complex developments in the BCS area, along with several subdivisions, and worked very closely with both Cities on numerous developments, greenspaces, parks, and planning for community amenities. If you ever rode with Mary through Bryan or College Station, particularly the areas between WM Fitch and North Bryan, she could tell you who built houses, who lived in them, who bought them later. She knew who developed parks and greenspaces, and who streets were named after.

Mary had an innate ability to connect with people and had a way with words. At an invocation she gave for a Board of Realtors Luncheon in 1997, she spoke a quote from a poem she had written years before, “Today is the only day: each moment is forever; …Now is the time, the only time; today is eternal memories. Today, did you say, “I love you”? She went on to say it’s a simple thought, that today is a reflection of the past and a blueprint for the future – that what we do lasts, through its footprints or trails of memories we create.

Upon quoting Corinthians 13, Mary provided the following invocation-

Remind us that our acts become the memories of others.

Remind us to be kindly in our daily encounters in our complex, confusing, challenging business.

Remind us to respect the synergy of our environment, even before we crank our bulldozers and remove mountains.

Remind us to take only what we need and to give more than we want to – to love one another – to stop to smell the roses – and to respect the spirit of all things.

Remind us that our memories are blessed, for…

We have heard children laughing, watched fireflies dance;

We have dreamed, hoped, and held the wonders of beauty.

May the memories that we create, that become a part of the lives of others, have no hurt, but be smiling memories that turn dull eyes bright.

Help us all to be less greedy, more grateful – to incorporate love, or charity, in every encounter. For if we have not love, we are as sounding brass, or a grinding engine – Amen-

Mary gave everyone she touched lasting memories that will be cherished the remainder of our lives. She was a lover of animals, the earth, and particularly loved trees, flowers, and gardens; and she frequently donated to almost any cause related to nature.
