Melvin James Thompson

June 24, 1928 — February 28, 2025

College Station, Texas

“Well done, good and faithful servant. Enter into the joy of your Lord.” Matthew 25:21

We are celebrating the life of our beloved father and friend, Melvin James Thompson. He was a true man of God for whom we all had great respect. He loved his children well by showing it through the many times he fixed our cars, re-finished furniture, did the wiring in our houses, hung sheet rock, and painted walls. He was a straight shooter who rarely minced words. He was a true engineer with a sharp, analytical mind who could fix, make or figure almost anything out and do it to near perfection.

Melvin James Thompson, 96, entered eternal rest on February 28, 2025 at 5 Points Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in College Station, Texas. He was born in El Campo, Texas on June 24, 1928 to Melvin Lane Thompson and Evelyn Katherine Winfield Thompson. He had one sister, Ethel Thompson Mendel and one brother, Billy Thompson. All preceded him in death, but now they are all reunited in life in their heavenly home.

He met the love of his life, Martha Sue Traylor Thompson at Aldine High School in Houston. She was a junior, and he was a senior. They married February 15, 1948. Sue preceded Melvin in death on June 21, 2019. He was a devoted husband of 71 years ,and we never doubted our parents’ love for one another.

Left to cherish his memories are his 4 children Sue Schwartz (Ron), Patti Caringer (Dave), Tina Arnold, Michael Thompson (Dianne) and 9 grandchildren David Combs, Nathan Winfield (Sarah), Kelly Shuster (Matt), Pamela Weeks (Jonathan), Hannah Arnold (Erin), Nate Arnold (Hannah Jane), Travis Arnold (Mandy), Brian Thompson, (Robin) Daniel Thompson (Maricela) and 17 great grandchildren.

Melvin graduated from Aldine high school in 1945 and was the class Salutatorian. He received an Associates of Art degree from Schreiner Military Institute in Kerrville, Texas in 1947. He worked during the day, and attended school at night as he and Sue began raising their children while living with Grandpa and Grandma Thompson. He finally received a degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Houston in 1955 and then happily bought a home of their own!

He began his work career in the home building industry in Houston. He transitioned to oil and gas and spent the bulk of his work life in this industry making several moves along the way before retiring at 62 to Wimberley. He received honors and awards for his work in the gas measurement industry traveling across Texas and Mexico working on gas and oil instrumentation.

Melvin and Sue enjoyed their retirement by golfing in Wimberley and Hilltop Lakes and joining RV clubs in both of these cities and exploring the U.S. with their fellow RVers. They loved spending time with their children, grandchildren, and great grands playing rousing, competitive games of Joker, Mexican Train, Wahoo, dominoes, or cards. Anything to get us all together around the table spending lots of time laughing. He also developed a passion for genealogy and spent countless hours and trips to courthouses to find information on the Winfield, Thompson, Traylor and Greaves families. He was a true family man and will be dearly missed by his family and all those whose lives he touched.
