Obituary

Nancy Joan Byer Waldie was born on August 1, 1939 in Marlin, Texas. She lived a life centered in faith, family and quiet strength. She went to be with her Lord and Savior on July 12, 2026.

As a young woman, Nancy married Sam Byer ‘63 shortly after graduating high school, beginning a chapter that would shape the foundation of her life. During those early years, Sam attended Texas A&M University, where he played football, and together they built a life rooted in hard work, dedication, and shared purpose.

Nancy and Sam made their home in Bryan, Texas where they raised their two daughters. Julie Ann Clark ’85 (Mike) and Lisa Kay Bush (Tim) were the center of Nancy’s life and a lasting source of pride.

Family was always at the heart of Nancy’s life. She and Sam often took their daughters back to the family farm in Marlin, where they spent time with her parents, A.L. “Dutch” Sebesta ’32 and Elizabeth “Bess” Sebesta. Those visits reflected what mattered most to Nancy — staying connected to her roots and to the people she loved.

In December of 1991, Nancy lost Sam, a profound loss that marked a difficult chapter in her life. In time, she found companionship again, marrying Alan Waldie ‘49. Together, Nancy and Alan shared meaningful years, including their time as volunteers at the George Bush Presidential Library, where they gave of their time and energy in service to others. Nancy lost Alan in 2016 and later filled her days supporting the Republican Women of Brazos Valley and Central Baptist Church.

In every season of her life, Nancy remained devoted to her family, creating a home filled with care, stability, and love. Her presence was a steady and reassuring force to those around her. Nancy’s life was one of resilience, devotion, and enduring love. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered by her family and all who knew her.

Nancy’s family wishes to express their sincere appreciation for her caregiver, Sophia Brown. Together with her family, Sophia was dedicated to providing whatever “Fancy Nancy” needed to help make the last years of her life special, safe and spirit-filled.
