Dr Raymond W Flumerfelt was born on November 18th, 1939 in Hobbs, New Mexico. His parents, Glenn Flumerfelt and Francis Burrows Flumerfelt were wheat farmers in Hugoton Kansas, but moved to Hobbs in the late 1930s, where his father found work as an oilfield roustabout during the dust bowl. A few years later, the family moved to Beaumont, Texas, where Raymond grew up and met his wife, Barabara. Raymond and Barbara began dating in high school and remained together from that point forward. Their 67 years of marriage are a testament to their love and dedication to each other and brought them great joy, two children, Stephanie Walker and Raymond Flumerfelt Jr, and four grandchildren, Addison, Kendall, and Peyton Flumerfelt, and Anamarie Walker.

Raymond attended Lamar University on a tennis scholarship, where he received a Chemical Engineering degree in 1961. With a lifelong passion for research, he decided to attend graduate school at Northwestern University, gaining a PHD. His professional career began as an assistant professor at Notre Dame and later the University of Wisconsin. In 1968, Raymond returned to Texas as a professor at the University of Houston, where he spent 17 years. After Houston, he wound up at Texas A&M as the Chemical Engineering department head for 7 years before moving into upper administration as the Deputy Vice Chancellor and Associate Dean in Texas A&M’s College of Engineering. During the later stages of his career, Raymond served as Dean of the Engineering Colleges at the University of Alabama and the University of Houston.

As a teacher, he always supported a large number of graduate students, many of whom became extended family. As a researcher, he was renowned for his expertise in foams, plastics, polymers, and transport phenomena. As an administrator, he took pride in helping the University of Houston and Texas A&M become nationally recognized departments, ranked in the top 10.

Throughout his life, his best friends were his Chemical Engineering Department colleagues at Houston and Texas A&M. He loved spending time with his friends and colleagues, particularly when competition was involved. Outside of work, he could often be found playing tennis, golfing, or sailing with his friends and family.

After retirement, Raymond focused his research on the technical analysis of stocks and mutual funds, where he was always trying to perfect his trading strategies. In addition, he pursued his passion for helping animals. His countless adopted stray dogs and cats provided him with good experience for him serving on the Board of Directors for the Aggieland Humane Society, where he was committed to keeping the kennels of Bryan College Station as no-kill shelters.
