Beloved daughter, sister, friend, wife, mother, and grandmother; Rebecca Jane Trew Rice, 75, passed away at her home in Bryan, TX on the morning of January 23, 2026.
Becky was born November 6, 1950 in Harlingen, Texas to Mary Cecil and Ted Trew.
Becky was born a fighter and that determination and fight never left her.
Becky had a wonderful childhood with her sisters, spending time on their Granddaddy’s ranch;getting to live in different states and travel with her parents and sisters. Becky was always surrounded by good friends and classmates and loved to read, write, draw, and make memories.
On the first day of their Freshman year of College at EKU, Becky met Les, and a 53 year love story that spanned multiple states, jobs, homes, friends, travels, and hundreds of thousands ofhours of laughter, love, and memories began. Meeting Les in his freshman beanie was one of her favorite stories to tell to anyone who would listen. The sparkle in her eyes and the unique laugh that everyone knew accompanied that story each and every time.
In 1972, Becky and Les married in a fairytale wedding surrounded by friends and family; and the next chapter in their story began. Over the following decade, Becky and Les kept writing their story, adding 3 children: Rachel, Michael, and William.
In addition to raising their 3 children, Becky was a much beloved elementary school teacher for more than 20 years. Thousands of lives were made better for having “Mrs. Rice” as their teacher. Her classroom was her pride and joy and it showed. It was a bright, welcoming, fun space where her students learned, felt loved, and were encouraged. Her passion for teaching, her love for her students, and her enthusiasm in the classroom made her everyone’s favorite.
Everyone who met Becky was immediately a friend and welcomed with her trademark smile, southern twang, and the biggest hug. She never met a stranger and errands frequently took twice as long because she made friends with everyone around her. Her infectious laugh and southern belle charm will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
After retiring from teaching, Becky focused on being the best BeBe to her 3 “Grandloves” Liv, Noah, and Gavin. From reading with them when they were little, to taking them to the Children’s museum, Science Camps, The Zoo, and spending joy filled hours watching them play and listening to their stories; to cheering them on in every endeavor, every sport, every passion, if it interested her GrandLoves, she immersed herself in it completely so she could share their passions with them. Being their BeBe was her greatest joy in life.
Only second to her family, were her dogs. Becky’s love for her animals was well known and admired. From the tiniest little yappers to the biggest breeds, they were all lap dogs and they were all equally loved, and spoiled. We know without a doubt that the gates of heaven were lined with hundreds of dogs waiting to greet her again.
With Becky’s passing; one chapter has closed, but so many more will be written by those she loved, and everyone she knew. Becky’s love and legacy will continue to live on in all who knew and loved her.
Becky was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest Marion Trew and Mary Cecil Trew, her niece, Sarah Berman, and her brother in law, David Berman.
She is survived by her sisters, Ellen Berman and Cynthia Trew. Her husband, Les Rice, daughter, Rachel Matthews and husband Nathan, her son Michael Rice and wife Melissa, and her sonWilliam Rice and fiancé Jodie; as well as her grandchildren, Liv Matthews, Noah Matthews, and Gavin Rice.
