Dr. Richard Michael "Mick" Robinson, DVM
Mick was born in San Diego, California on June 18, 1930. As a child, he quickly showed his innate animal husbandry with pets of many different species and helping on the family pheasant farm. He was a letterman on the basketball and tennis team in high school in Fallbrook, California where he graduated from, was drafted in the Army, served in the Korean War where he was awarded two Sharpshooter medals in the Infantry. He wrote may letters home to his mother Annie with sketches and descriptions of the flora and fauna of the area he was stationed at. After serving his duty, he moved to Tempe, Arizona where he completed his undergraduate degree at Arizona State University. From Arizona, he came to Texas to enroll in Texas A&M University but had to work a year to obtain residency and ended up working at UT Austin where he met his wife, Dorthea " Dottie". They were married in 1955. He obtained his Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine in May of 1962 and completed his PHD in Veterinary Pathology in 1968. He worked in the Pathology Department at the Veterinary School at Texas A&M and taught in the school curriculum until he moved to the Pathology Department at the newly established Texas Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory where he worked until his retirement.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Dr. Dorthea B. Trevino Robinson, DVM (retired, Class of 1966). his children Savannah, Al (and his wife Galina), Melissa, Desi and grandchildren Heather Meyer, Cara Hogue, AJ and Victoria Robinson.
We celebrate his patient and humble demeanor, ability to teach skills of a great variety to whomever needed his help, his Naturalist attitude and love of all animals Great and Small, feathered, scaled, haired or shelled. He was a self-taught Guitarist, Baker, Potter, and Knife Maker and loved wood working. He authored several research papers on White Tailed Deer diseases and mentored many Wildlife Sciences and Veterinary students during his tenure at Texas A&M. He volunteered with Dottie at the Brazos Valley Animal Shelter health clinics on weekends for several years.
