In Loving Memory of Robert J. “Sam” Tessen

Born November 27, 1946, in Appleton, Wisconsin, Robert (Sam) lived a life marked by service, leadership, education, and a commitment to helping others. From an early age, he embraced the values of service and responsibility through the Boy Scouts of America, advancing from Cub Scout through the ranks to achieve the distinguished honor of Eagle Scout. His dedication to excellence continued throughout his education, graduating as his high school salutatorian in 1966.

Sam went on to serve in the United States Air Force before pursuing higher education. He earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin and later received his master's degree from Western Illinois University in Macomb, Illinois. He married and became the father of two boys, Ryan and Korry. His life took an important turn when he moved to Texas to open and serve as administrator of an MHMR facility in Brownsville. It was there that he met his future wife, Gail Eckstein. Just three months later, they were married. Their marriage lasted 36 years and brought together a loving family that included their children, stepchildren, and grandchildren.

Throughout his career, he continued to make a lasting impact on healthcare in Texas. He worked to establish Texas Rural Health Clinics, helping bring medical services to communities where they were needed most. He later served as Executive Director of the Texas Osteopathic Medical Association (TOMA), where his leadership and dedication further contributed to the healthcare profession and the people it served.

Sam will be remembered not only for his accomplishments, but for the lives he touched along the way—for his commitment to service, his determination to make a difference, and the many people whose worlds were made better because of him.
