Russell James “Jim” Maggs Jr., 79, of Bryan, Texas, passed away peacefully and entered the presence of his Lord and Savior on Sunday, July 12, 2026.
Jim was born in Niagara Falls, New York, to Russell James Maggs Sr. and Katherine Maggs. He later made his way to Texas, where he attended Texas A&M University and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology. A proud member of the Fightin’ Texas Aggie Class of 1969, Jim carried his Aggie spirit with him throughout his life.
Following graduation, Jim was commissioned as a Captain in the United States Air Force, where he honorably served for four years as a Missile Silo Operator. After completing his military service, he moved to Houston to pursue his lifelong goal of becoming an optometrist. He graduated from optometry school in 1977 before relocating to Livingston, Texas.
It was in Livingston that Jim met the love of his life, Debra, whom he married and shared a devoted life with. Together they settled in College Station, where Jim established his optometry practice. For more than 35 years, he faithfully served generations of patients with compassion, professionalism, and genuine care. Together, Jim and Debra built a loving home and raised their two daughters.
Jim was a devoted member of Christ Church and lived a life grounded in faith, service, and love for his family. Outside of his profession, he enjoyed cheering on the Aggies, hunting, gardening, and spending treasured time with those he loved the most. His kindness, unwavering dedication, and quiet strength will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Russell James Maggs Sr. and Katherine Maggs; and his father in law, Daniel Starr. Jim is survived by his beloved wife, Debra Maggs; mother in law, Betty Starr; his daughters, Kimberly Maggs, Kelli Regini and her husband, JC Regini; his cherished granddaughter, Cassidy Regini; his brother, Joseph Maggs and his wife, Debbie; and his sister, Patricia Cox and her husband, Ralph. He also leaves behind numerous extended family members, dear friends, and generations of patients whose lives he touched throughout his career.
Jim’s legacy of faith, service, compassion, and love for his family will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
The family would like to thank the staff with Enhabit Hospice and The Langford for all the care and compassion they provided Jim in his final days.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Covenant Fund at the Langford in remembrance of Jim.
