Ruth Ann McLeod, aged 92, passed away peacefully on July 31, 2025, in Marquez, Texas, surrounded by her beloved family. Born on July 3, 1933, in Plattsmouth, Nebraska, Ruth lived a vibrant life, marked by her dedication to family, community service, and her career at Brazos County, where she served from June 1, 1966, until September 30, 2020. Throughout her time at the county, she worked closely with six county judges and more than 25 commissioners, earning a reputation for her tireless work ethic. In recognition of her impactful contributions, the Brazos County Election Administration Building was officially designated in her name in 2017.
Ruth’s impact extended well beyond her professional life. She was a pillar of strength and guidance for her family, constantly balancing the demands of raising six rowdy children with the love that filled their home. Her advice was treasured, and her lively conversations often brought joy to family gatherings. Ruth was known for her dedication to looking her best at all times; she attended every occasion with impeccable attire, hair, nails, and makeup. This attention to detail mirrored her driven personality, whether in her career or personal life.
An avid plant lover, Ruth had a green thumb that made her home bloom with gorgeous plants. Her love included her cherished four-legged friends, who filled her days with joy and companionship. She also found solace in her hobbies, enjoying relaxing moments with her various stashed candies, Blue Bell ice cream, Hallmark movies, and Amish romance novels. Among her favorite memories was her first car, generously donated by a kind neighbor, which freed her from using a red wagon for family transportation, a gesture that she never forgot. The family lake house in Arkansas held a special place in her heart, providing a backdrop for cherished moments with loved ones.
Ruth was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church Bryan, where she served as Sunday School Treasurer, contributing her time and talents to her church community. Her legacy includes the love she imparted to her children—sons Robert E. Sims, William C. Sims, and Martin C. Sims; daughter Cynthia A. Mahan and her husband Troy; as well as her grandchildren Tara Greer, Brian Hobbs, Mike Hobbs, Cory Sims, Jeremiah Sims, Justin Clark, and Jarad Clark.
Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, William H. McLeod; daughter Carlotta Barrow; son Hillie Sims; grandson Cutter Sims; and her five brothers and three sisters. Her life's work, her family, her flowers, and her service to the church stand as proud accomplishments that will continue to inspire those who knew her.
The family wishes to extend a special thanks to Ruth's caregivers, Shaunte, Vanessa and Shayla Witherspoon, and Debbie Baker, whose kindness and compassion made a significant difference in her life during her final years.
While Ruth's physical presence may no longer grace this world, her spirit and love will forever remain in the hearts of her family and friends, a warm reminder of the impact one extraordinary life can have on many. She will be deeply missed but fondly remembered.
