Susan Jean
Holcombe
January 6, 1954 – June 8, 2026
First Baptist Church - Bryan
Starts at 11:00 am (Central time)
Susan was born on January 6, 1954 in Upland, California and she died on June 8, 2026 at her home in Bryan, Texas. She graduated from South Garland High School in Garland, Texas in 1972 and attended Henderson County Junior College in Athens, Texas. She was a beauty queen, winning the title "Ms. Black-eyed Pea" at the "Black-Eyed Pea Festival" in Athens, Texas in 1974. She married Stephen Holcombe on May 17, 1975. Steve was a pastor. They served churches in Penelope, Howland, and Bryan Texas before being appointed missionaries to Argentina by the Foreign Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention in 1985. Their son Jeremy was born in 1979 and their daughter Jennifer was born in 1981 both in Bryan, Texas. The whole family spent 7 years serving as missionaries before returning to the states in 1992. Between 1992 and 2009 they served three more churches in Sherman, Lampasas, and Palestine Texas. In 2009 Steve began serving as the Director of Missions of the churches of the Creath Brazos Baptist Association and Susan served as the administrative assistant. She retired in 2020.
Susan was a homemaker and incredible cook, famous for her oatmeal cookies and coconut cream pie. She was a loving wife and mother and took pride in raising her children while also serving as a pastor's wife. After retirement, Susan and Steve served as members of the First Baptist Church of Bryan, Texas.
More than anything that might be said of Susan was that she loved the Lord Jesus and became a follower of His early in her life. She was willing to give up familiar surroundings here in the United States, learn a new language and culture and serve the Lord in Argentina or wherever the Lord led. She had a contagious smile and loving heart. She loved little babies and had a way of making them smile. And she also had a deep caring spirit for the elderly. Before visiting her own mom in her assisted living apartment, she would visit with all the ladies in wheelchairs in the commons area. She could multi-task. She was good with finances and kept the checkbook balanced for years. She was highly organized and wanted each thing in its place.
She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Stephen Holcombe of Bryan, Texas, her son Jeremy Holcombe of Bryan, Texas and her daughter Jennifer Thompson and husband David also of Bryan, Texas. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Taylor Sorsby and her husband James of Portland, Texas, Cole Holcombe also of Portland, Texas, Hailey Thompson of Austin, Texas, Hayden Thompson and husband Cory of Bryan, Texas, and Hunter Thompson also of Bryan, Texas and two great grandchildren Laz and Everly, sister Patsy Morris and husband E.J. of Sulfur Springs, Texas, brother Shannon Foote and brothers in law Gary Cole and M.D. Hardwick. She is preceded in death by her parents Errol and Edna Foote, sisters Betty Cole, Sharon Hardwick, and twin brother Robert Foote.
