Sylvia Louise Welch, a cherished matriarch and beloved member of the community, passed away on January 31, 2026, in Bryan, Texas, at the age of 96. Born on January 1, 1929, in Kurten, Texas, Sylvia’s life was a beautiful tapestry woven with love, family, and an unwavering commitment to her Christian faith.
Sylvia's professional journey commenced at the tender age of 13, when she began working for a printing company, printing tags that were placed on sacks of feed for livestock. With determination, she walked to work after school and spent Saturdays earning silver change. Following her education at Stephen F. Austin High School in Bryan and her completion of courses at McKenzie Baldwin Business School, she embarked on various career paths. She served at the Texas A&M Experiment Station, utilizing her typing and dictation skills, and later contributed to the State Soil Conservation Department. After marriage to her beloved husband, Jimmie, she devoted herself to her family for several years before joining the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission, where she served ten years while also assisting Jimmie in their family business, Welch Electric.
Sylvia was the epitome of generosity and dedication, often spending her time helping not only her children but other youngsters with their 4H and FFA projects. She cherished the moments spent helping the girls with sewing and cooking and delighted in the excitement of live animal projects and caring for children’s pets—her favorite being a talking crow named Alvin.
As a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and great great grandmother, she took immense pride in her family. She was lovingly referred to as “Mimi” by her adored grandchildren and remained an active presence in their lives, attending T-ball, soccer, softball, basketball, and swimming events, always cheering loudly from the stands. Her encouragement extended beyond sports; she was a steadfast supporter of their academic and personal endeavors, instilling the values and beliefs she cherished deeply.
Sylvia’s faith was a cornerstone of her life, a belief she nurtured and passed down from her strong, Christian mother. She and Jimmie were dedicated members of First Free Will Baptist Church before becoming integral to Fellowship Free Will Baptist Church. Sylvia took pride in serving as Superintendent of the Primary Department for many years, where her love for teaching and guiding young hearts flourished.
Sylvia enjoyed drinking Dr. Pepper, watching Fox News, and working on crossword puzzles. She found solace in the pages of fiction novels by Danielle Steele and Nora Roberts, and her spirit flourished in the company of her church community.
Sylvia was preceded in death by her loving husband, Jimmie G. Welch Jr.; her daughter, Michele LaJuan Welch; her parents, John and Ruby Utsey; her sisters, Dorothy Kathleen Utsey and Merle Wiedman; and her grandson, Dustin Smith, along with great grandson, Jace Harris. She leaves behind a legacy enriched by her two sons, Jim G. Welch III and wife Sherri Welch, Leslie Scott Welch and wife Diane Welch; her grandchildren, Brandon Welch, Dawn Bowers, Dana Kay, Mindi Millhollon Spears, Marla Harris, Jarrod Welch, Matt Welch, and Madison Ledlow; her great grandchildren, Brayden Welch, Carson Welch, Rylee Bowers, Allison Bowers, Chaney Kay, Charli Kay, Tayler Millhollon, Parker Spears, Walker Spears, Shain Harris, Chance Polk, Alexis Mooney, Riley Mooney, Hayley Warden, Faith Murray, Kinsley Welch, Eleanor Ledlow, and James Ledlow; great-great grandchildren Landry Turskey, Charli Friesen, and Arianna Harris.
Sylvia's remarkable journey was painted with unconditional love and dedication to her family. Her legacy of faith, kindness, and commitment to nurturing the next generations will continue to resonate in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her. She will be profoundly missed, yet her spirit will live on in the countless lives she touched throughout her extraordinary life.
