Wendy Haiges Avolio, 57, has entered the presence of her Lord and Savior and is survived by her loving husband, Michael Albert Avolio, 54, formerly of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, and her adoring sons, Jack Alexander Avolio, 24, and Samuel Augustus Avolio, 17.
Wendy was born in June of 1968, in York, Pennsylvania, to Howard Bennett Haiges and Virginia Burdett Haiges. She graduated from York Suburban High School in York, Pennsylvania, in 1986, and Washington and Jefferson College in Washington, Pennsylvania, in 1990, with an education degree in English and German Language.
She went on to receive a Master’s Degree in Education from California University of Pennsylvania and had a fulfilling career spanning 16 years as a middle school German teacher. Wendy was adored by students and parents alike and was lovingly known as Fräulein Haiges and, later, Frau Avolio.
In July of 2000, Wendy married into the military, taking an early retirement from teaching to begin her new life with Michael. She dutifully served her country as a U.S. Army military spouse, dedicated mother, and homemaker until Michael’s retirement from military service in College Station, Texas, in November of 2021.
In May of 2024, Wendy was diagnosed with glioblastoma, a terminal form of brain cancer. Taken from us too soon, Wendy fought with dignity, honor, and grace until the end of her life when she drew her last breath in her husband’s arms. Despite her illness, Wendy demonstrated incredible resiliency, and served as a beacon of hope, strength, and inspiration to her family and friends.
Wendy adopted the heart of a servant until her last breath. Her passion for life was rooted in maintaining and beautifying her family home, supporting her husband, and raising her sons. Wendy was a teacher inside and out and had a mesmerizing influence on everyone she met, bettering the lives of students, friends, and family alike. Her memory will live in the hearts of all those who know and love her.
