Spencer Lee Green

On Friday, September 28, 2007, our wonderful son and brother, Spencer Lee Green, went to be with the Lord, following a difficult 5 year battle with cancer. Spencer was a 2001 graduate of Bryan High School. He was attending Southern Nazarene University in Bethany, Oklahoma when cancer forced him to come home for treatment.

Spencer was born on December 29, 1982 in Glenwood Springs, Colorado and moved to Bryan, Texas in 1988. He enjoyed making people laugh and was voted by his classmates to be awarded the senior superlative, “Personality Plus”. In high school he ran track, specializing in the hurdles under the great coaching of David Greeno.

Spencer had a love for Christ and encouraged others to pursue faith in Christ. He was a leader in his youth group and played drums and guitar at the Bryan Church of the Nazarene where his father serves as pastor.

Spencer’s great passion was music. He wanted to write music and travel and perform. He was able to do that for a while with a band he formed called “So Long Good-byes”. Some of his songs can be heard on his website, http://bootlegspencer.com ; additionally his artwork and thoughts are included. More of Spencer’s music can be heard at myspace.com/spencergreen.

Carrying on Spencer’s memory in their hearts will be his parents, Lonnie and Christie Green and his brother, Scott, all of Bryan, Texas. He is also survived by his grandparents, Gene and Marietta Post of Stillwater, Oklahoma, and Bob and Jo Green of Bothell, Washington, along with many uncles, aunts and cousins.

Friends are invited to greet the family at a viewing to be held on Monday, October 1, 2007 from 6 to 8 PM at the Church of the Nazarene, 2122 E. William J. Bryan Pkwy. in Bryan (across from the Post Office). A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, October 2 at 4 PM also at the Church of the Nazarene.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to: “The Spencer Green Memorial Fund” and mailed to the Church of the Nazarene, 2122 E. William J. Bryan Pkwy., Bryan, TX 77802.

The family wishes to thank all of their friends who have provided so much support and love and prayers during this difficult time.

Please leave condolences at www.callawayjones.com.

Condolences

  1. I never met Spencer in person but corresponded with him via email when I was so moved my his music and how it related to my life at the time that I felt I had to let him know. Just from the little time that I knew him I could tell he was an outstanding individual whose faith and love for Christ was second to none. Spencer you will be missed.

  2. We love you Lonnie and Christie. All our thoughts and prayers are with you through this difficult time. Spencer will be greatly missed..

  3. Dear Lonnie, Christie, Scott and family,
Please know that Spencer’s example had a profound and lasting effect. He and Michael were friends at school. Partly because of Spencer’s influence Michael has dedicated his life to Christ. He has been on a mission trip to Zayre.
You’ll continue to be in our prayers.

  4. I wen to high school with Spencer Green and had the pleasure and the opportunity to be his teammate. Spencer was a tough person, a tough competitor and a great motivator, but more than that he was a great friend. My heart goes out to his family. I thank God that my brother and I were able to know and compete with Spencer; with love–Jesus Morales

  5. I didn’t know Spencer very well in high school, and I didn’t even know he was sick until I saw the notice in the paper. I have one very vivid memory of Spencer:
In English senior year he did a spoof of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s ‘The Scarlet Letter’ to the tune of ‘Sweet Home Alabama.’ The entire class was laughing, including the teacher. I still remember the lyrics, ‘Sweet Hester they condemned you, but that’s ok, ’cause you’re going to make it through. At least you’ve got Pearl your fairy elf… ‘

Spencer’s site is really beautiful. I wish I had gotten to know him better. My thoughts are with you.

  6. To express our deep sympathy to you in your loss. May God’s blessing and peace be with Spencer’s family.

  7. Although I didn’t know Spencer well, he was truly an inspiration of God’s grace and what it meant to be a true believer. I always thought he was so brave. Please know your family is in my prayers. He will be missed.

  8. Christie and Lonnie, my thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. What a wonderful son you brought into this world and I know he is in Heaven now with our Lord Jesus Christ.

  9. I am sadden by this news. We will all miss Spencer Green. I too ran track with Spencer. He was a great motivator with a great sense of humor. That is something that we will never forget. This is a true loss to the community and people who knew him. My heart and prayers go out to his family and friends. Spencer you were a big part of my decision to go to college and never settle and to reach for higher goals. I will miss you my friend.

  10. Many prayers continue to be lifted up for the Green family.
May God’s deep grace and love surround you and enfold you.
    God bless.

  11. God took a shinning star to be with HIm. Spencer was one of the good guys at BHS. Thanks for being a friend and a good role model.
May God grant peace to his family during this time.
    God bless.

  12. Lonnie, Christie and Scott,
Over the past 5 years our family has prayed for Spencer’s healing. Even during the most difficult of times your family’s faith remained unwavering and the evidence of the Lord’s presence was undeniable. What an awesome group of prayer warriors and supporters you have had in your church family. God’s presence is everywhere. During Spencer’s short life he has obviously impacted many people’s lives with his faith in Christ, music and humor. He definitely lived fully with what time he had. What a blessing. You can feel peace in knowing that Spencer is in His arms now. We will continue to keep you all in our prayers.

  13. Our deepest condolances and sympathy be with you. You are a strong family and will be better people for having such a fine son and bother.

  14. We have followed your journey and prayed for God’s grace to soften the rough edges many times. Know that we will continue to ask God to give you Himself as you take this new journey. May God embrace you with His love and compassion in a deep, sustaining way.

  15. To the Green Family,
Though we have never had the honor of meeting Spencer, we have heard his name spoken often by our neighbor, Billie Smith. When she would give us an update, we would always breathe a prayer for him and his family. You see, we lost a son in 1988, so we feel your pain. Knowing where he is, is wonderful because one day, he will probably be right behind Jesus to welcome you into heaven to live with him forever! May our Lord comfort you during these days and all the days to come. With heartfelt sympathy, The Jesse Stanfields

  16. Pastor Lonnie and family, I am so sorry to hear about your beloved son Spencer’s passing. I feel the pain and loss you are going through but we know he is smiling down from Heaven, please do not cry for me as I am well, whole and happy !!!

    God Bless,
    Rhonda Smith

  17. I never got to know him well but what memories I do have, I cherish. I listen to his cd every chance I get and visit his website often.
