Violet Fay Waters

Violet Vaughan Waters

Violet Vaughan Waters, 92, passed away June 29, 2019. Born November 13, 1926 in Port Neches, Texas to Alvin Vaughan and Ezora Guillotte Vaughan, Violet graduated as salutatorian from Port Neches High School before attending Lon Morris College from 1945 to 1947. Raised as a child in both the United Methodist and Roman Catholic faiths – those of her father and mother, respectively – she married Bob E. Waters, a classmate at Lon Morris who would soon become a Methodist minister, in 1947.

From there the couple attended Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas, both graduating in 1949. They moved to Dallas that year, where Bob studied at Southern Methodist University’s Perkins School of Theology, graduating in 1952, and Violet worked as the financial secretary for Munger Place United Methodist Church in Dallas. She and Bob served Methodist churches of the Texas Conference in Orange, Beaumont, Kountze, Texas City, Mount Pleasant, and College Station, prior to Bob’s appointment as District Superintendent of the Beaumont District in 1987 and his subsequent retirement in 1993.

Bob and Violet were married more than 70 years prior to his death in 2018. Violet is survived by their children, Vaughan Waters of San Antonio, Texas; Wesley Waters of Woodville, Texas; Stephen Waters of Center, Texas; Suzanne Waters Weeks of Killeen, Texas; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Among Violet’s favorite Bible verses was the Twenty-Seventh Psalm: “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? When the wicked, even mine enemies and foes, came upon me to eat up my flesh, they stumbled and fell. Though an host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear; though war should rise against me, in this will I be confident. One thing have I desired of the Lord, that I will seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord, all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to enquire in His temple.”

Visitation will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 3, 2019 at A&M United Methodist Church in College Station, Texas; the funeral will take place immediately following at 1:00 p.m., followed by burial in Woodville, Texas at approximately 4:30 p.m. Honorary pallbearers are the United Methodist Women (UMW) of the Texas Conference.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the United Methodist Women (UMW) at the church of your choice.

  1. So grateful I was blessed to know Violet while I was growing up and later as an adult. She was a special woman!

  2. So sorry for the loss of your mother. I know she will be missed by all who knew her, but most especially by your family. I was blessed to have known her; such a special, welcoming lady. Thankful for the lives she and your dad lived and that they are reunited in our Lord. Thinking of you with sincere sympathy.

  3. Violet and Bob were neighbors, ministers, and great friends to me and my family! May they rest in peace together for eternity!

  4. Heaven has another beautiful angel she was a sweet lovely lady with her beautiful smile now Mr Water has his bride with him again and they are rejoicing with their Lord. Keeping the family in my prayers

  5. I was in Lon Morris College with Violet and Bob (1945 – 1947) and was at their wedding in Port Neches. We have counted them as dear friends across the years.

My husband Gus followed Bob as Pastor of Asbury Methodist Church, Beaumont. We enjoyed our last visit with Violet in Bryan a couple of years ago.

We extend our deepest love to all of Violet and Bob’s family. While it is always hard to lose a loved one, we all know that there are times when it is best for them to “go on home”, as in Violet’s case. We rejoice to picture them together again without the limitations of Earth!

  6. We are sorry to hear about Violet’s death. She was loved and respected by members of A&M UMC. We not only had the pleasure of knowing Violet and Bob as church members but as neighbors to their family. Our sincere condolences to the Waters family.
