W.J. Byford

1926 – 2006

W. J. Byford, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away at his home on Thursday, December 7, 2006 at the age of 80.

Services will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, December 9, 2006 at Restever Memorial Park Cemetery. Monsignor John A. McCaffrey will officiate the service where his life will be celebrated by family and friends. Arrangements are under the direction of Callaway-Jones Funeral Home.

W.J. Byford was born in Mart, Texas on August 29, 1926. He was raised in McGregor, Texas where he graduated from McGregor High School in 1944. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1944 and served in the Pacific Theatre. W.J. received his Civil Engineering degree from Texas A-M University in 1951 where he was a member of the Corps of Cadets. During that period, he was called into service for the Korean War where he served in the United States Air Force.

He served with honors in the following United States Armed Forces: United States Navy during World War II, as a 1st Lieutenant in the United States Air Force during the Korean War, and retiring as a Colonel in the United States Army Reserves. He was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal on October 28, 1981.

W.J. worked for the Texas Highway Department for 32 years and retired as District 17 Maintenance Engineer. He was a member of the Texas Society of Professional Engineers and served as Chapter President 1960-61 and 1971-72.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Evelyn Byford; daughter Rebecca Byford of Dallas, Texas; son William Byford of Bryan, Texas; son Robert Byford of Dallas, Texas; and Renee Mynier and son-in-law Roy Mynier of Austin, Texas and granddaughters Julia and Lindsey Mynier. Surviving sisters include Mary Frances Spoonts of McGregor, Texas and Bettye Jo Johnson of McGregor, Texas.

He is preceded in death by his parents William Sherley Byford and Annie Mary Inmon Byford; brother Burnard Byford and sister Evelyn Pfieffer.
